Nog and Garak got into an argument and weren’t able to settle their differences, so I gave it a few hours, thinking they might have calmed down enough to talk it out. Instead, this happened.

I enlisted Counsellor Ezri to offer some comfort and advice, even though they’ve only been here for a day, because Garak’s husband was either doing a big poo or sneaking in some uninterrupted reading time

Hii I heard we were doing here me outs (if I haven’t missed them, that is). But anyways uh. 12 year old me was very fond of Nog when he got his starfleet uniform.

Thinking a lot lately about how Nog joined Starfleet to build a better life for himself.

About how when he was basically a college sophomore when people who didn't even know he existed made a series of choices that ended his schooling and landed him on the front lines. About how eager he was to prove himself. How excited. How scared in ways that never managed to be quite real until he was lying on the ground bleeding.

How he came home and people who meant well told him his pain wasn't real, that he should ignore it. How a therapist who didn't know any better just made it worse (therapists are people too). How his best friend in the universe couldn't handle his coping mechanisms. How easy it was for him to retreat into fantasy rather than face a reality that life hadn't prepared him for. About how, trite as it may seem to some people who have never been there, just walking out and hugging his family was a HUGE step towards healing.

And I know it's never really revisited, but I also think a lot about how much Nog must have suffered and fought offscreen after that to reclaim his former life and former self-identity. About how Ezri eventually admits that psychosomatic pain is just as real as the kind with a pinpointable cause. How Jake eventually apologizes and explains that what REALLY made him angry was seeing someone he loved in pain and not knowing what to do to help. So he tried to act normal, but the anger was still there. How Nog could never tell his family how bad it actually got for him at his worst, because that would hurt them, but how deep down they still knew because however it sometimes feels, everyone suffers and that's a huge part of what brings us together.

Nog will always carry pain with him, but he'll come to understand that he's not alone in that, and it will help. Life won't ever be the same, but it will go on.
