[social sandbox] Here's Something Special
There are so many good things going on here at NPR that I’d like to send out a sandbox with 15 items. But I know we’re all short on time, so I’m keeping today’s note to five items.
1. Have some fun today with Elise Hu. It’s entertaining. It’s educational. It’s human. It’s “Elise Goes East.” Go and spend some time with this Tumblr. Elise is doing something special here.
2. Storytelling is an art. And every artist knows that they need to spend time working on their technique. Here at NPR we have a wonderful new resource for doing just that: the NPR Storytelling Tumblr. The training team is using this space to highlight the best ways to spin a tale.
BONUS: Remember the #PubRadioVoice discussion we all had at the end of January? Then don’t miss Alison MacAdam's NiemanLab piece today about the “public radio voice.” It features Sam Sanders and Tamara Keith!
3. #NOLASchools gets people talking. It was a team effort in New Orleans last night as Michel Martin’s “Chartered Waters” education discussion buzzed with 700+ #NOLASchools tweets during the 90-minute event. Davar Ardalan says the key to this success was collaboration between NPR, WWNO and The Times-Picayune. Here’s a Storify of the best bits from the discussion.
4. From #MashPic to #MashMeet. Social media gets real when you bring people together in real life. Mashable is doing just that with their Instagram account. The company’s audience-focused, platform-appropriate strategy is outlined in this nifty Digiday article. h/t Tajha Chappellet-Lanier
5. Should I worry about the FB news from yesterday? I had a number of people ask me about this after sending out the Tuesday sandbox. The main headline from yesterday’s announcement was that you’ll be seeing more content from your friends (The Verge, WaPo). Where does that leave publishers? Could “CONTENTGEDDON” be upon us, as suggested by The Register?
My instinct is that the changes will not have a substantial impact on our numbers (fingers crossed). I’m more concerned about what happens if/when the much-rumored hosting of publisher content becomes reality. Will FB then start favoring hosted publishers’ content over posts from publishers with traditional pages?
Look out! The sandbox is coming right back at you tomorrow with more of what’s great about NPR and the social spaces we live in.
