stillness

wind sweeps through needled boughs

gentle swaying and an owl's call

wrap the silence in a muted calm

clear

moonlight bathes the earth

starlight and reflected ripples

paints the night in consealing tones

the chirping insects and frogs

quiet as the night wares on

pressing around you

cradles

this stillness

a refuge from the abuse

those that would hurt you

asleep

and yet the running water

that you pass over

reminds you that this stillness

will not last

the sun will rise again

heartache is not far away

this reminder taints the night

fills that stillness with melancholy

there is no hope for change

and this moment itself is fragile

so often the moonlight illuminates

tears

this beautiful heartbreak

in hours not quite human

sadness like an art

the only refuge for a soul past dead
