It had been several weeks since Mel last called to Rapunzel to enter the tower, but it was not for lack of desire to. The Witch stood at the bottom of the tall tower, shy one finger and covered in numerous cuts and burns. Now that she was free, the only thing she could think of was Rapunzel and hope she did not think Mel had abandoned her.

to go with that headcanon, when Mel was raising Rapunzel she always wished she could be beautiful again for her. Even though Rapunzel didn't care about how she looked because she was her mother, Mel always wished she could see who she truly was. In the lines before Stay With Me she is actually projecting her own shame onto how Rapunzel feels rather than truly believing Rapunzel is ashamed of her.

"Happy Birthday, mother," Rapunzel said with a bright smile. "I made something for you." She rushed over to the bed and crouched down, pulling a painting from underneath. "It's us, just you and I in the tower. And...I know you wish to be more beautiful, so I painted you that way. Even though...even though you don't need to be."

Mel smiled at Rapunzel as she retrieved the painting, looking it over and her smile could only grow. Rapunzel had painted her well, it was a likeness to what she looked like before she was cursed with ugliness. "It's wonderful," she said, turning her attention back to her daughter.
