A most fundamental need for happiness, and one of the crucial indicators of mental wellbeing is the ability to speak up. People should speak up for their needs - that, is the adult thing to do. All that talk of, "If it is asked, it is no longer the same" is fantasy. No human being has a crystal ball.
If people want something, and they know that they deserve it because they themselves have given value, they should speak up. It is funny that, it is mostly only in romantic relationships that people expect others to be able to psychically know everything that they need. To persist in that error is childish.
At work, and in business, we more often always strive to, and commend ourselves for speaking up about terms, including compensation and so on.
The sooner we get that we have no alternative to do the same in relationships, despite the fact that a few people might be able know the needs of others even when they are not clearly expressed and communicated, the better we'd all be.
