The one thing I never want to be...
is ignorant of how my actions affect others.
There are enough people in the world who go about their day, everyday, treating others inconsiderately, disrespectfully, and in the most uncourteous ways while never thinking twice about it. This can range from one taking their family for granted and doing whatever the hell they want, at the expense of those who love them, to being brusque (which is incredibly rude) with store employees.
I ask, does it really take that much effort to put on a fucking smile and be nice?
Is it really to much to ask that people step out of their self-absorbed bubbles and take responsibility for their behavior?
Every time I buy something at a store, any store, or even just walk inside, I try to be exceptionally nice and polite to whoever is working. I've been in their shoes, personally. So, yes, I DO make it a point to be the first to ask "how are you? how is your day going?" right when my turn comes up in line. It's policy for them to ask you, but I feel most would be pleasantly surprised when you ask them instead.
Or, even easier, when you're walking along the street, sidewalk, wherever, and you lock eyes with someone, GIVE THEM A SMILE! Seriously, don't quickly look away with an apathetic bitch-face, it really makes no fucking difference whether or not they are a complete stranger. A simple smile can make a person's whole day, instantly brightening their life. And honestly, I tend to think a lot more highly of the people who smile back at me than those who don't.
You can't expect to go through life treating people however the hell you want. That's not how it works. You have to try, to the best of your ability, to be a decent person to others. And, on the whole, is this really too much to ask?
