I'm back with the headcanons, as always DISCLAIMER, if you want to use any of these prompts or headcanons for any type of fan work (fanfic, fanart, incorporate them in your headcanons) I'd like to be credited as at least inspiration.
That being said let's jump into Kiba X Shino + Hinata
As a heads up I'll be using They/them to refer to Hinata and He/him for both Shino and Kiba.
Basics
- as a team they share a deep emotional bond, while additionally Kiba and Shino develop romantic feelings for each other
- Kiba is loud and affectionate, open about his emotions, warm and loyal and the extrovert of the group.
- Shino is observant and emotionally reserved, also unconcerned with societal rules and gender, very supportive with a side of glaring at you like he's planning your murder if you dare hurt the people he cares about. He still manages to be dramatic as in canon.
- Hinata is shy (tho they'll slowly come out from that shell), introverted, empathetic and very easy to love. They give heaps of silent affection, trust and emotional support and they'll definitely burst into yelling if they're overwhelmed enough.
- Basically, Hinata is an anchor, a point of union between Kiba's openness and Shino's subtlety. Kiba brings in warmth, humor and a lively energy, shino brings insightfulness and a grounding presence.
- between the three they balance their anxiousness, overthinking and social awkwardness
Coming out: an honest awkward mess
-Okay so, Kiba came out to his mother when he was very young and his mother accepted him, so he's always been known as only a boy to everyone, and that means he forgets nobody knows he's trans outside of his clan.
- kiba first comes out to Kakashi in a completely unplanned way, he just happened to get his period at the worst ever moment, which was a joint mission with team 7, and then subsequently realised nobody knew he was trans and spent the mission pretty withdrawn, which is a fair cause of concern considering how boisterous he usually is. Kakshi pulls him aside while they set to stop for the night and Kiba just tells him he's trans, got his period and doesn't know how to tell his team now. Kakashi also figures he's binging with bandages by his posture and tells him to not be as stupid as he was (essentially coming out to Kiba) and actually ask his mother for a proper binder. he also assured him Kurenai will get it.
- Kiba does tell Kurenai later on just in case a situation like that happens again, and now he has a supportive Sensei who will watch him like a hawk to make sure he's not binding with bandages, overdoing his regular binder or uncomfortable and not telling anyone.
- now, about Hinata, they're some flavour of non-binary with masc leaning presentation. The poor thing has been struggling for a while due to rigid gender ideas in the clan that don't allow them to understand there's more than being a boy or a girl.
- as all the genin slowly start going through puberty, Hinata starts wearing looser hoodies and shirts as they grow uncomfortable with the changes their body is going through. Kakashi sees this, sees himself before he discovered the world's unsafest binding method, and knows he'll have to keep an eye on Hinata just in case.
- it's during a joint training session that all comes to a boiling point, Kakashi has been watching and thus has noticed Hinata growing increasingly overwhelmed and slowly starting to dissociate, so he does the responsible thing and pulls Hinata aside with an excuse about the kid looking like they're getting heatstroke. He manages to break Hinata out of that state and at the first "what's going on?" Hinata breaks and spills everything they've been going through that got worse when puberty started.
- Kakashi then explains about gender, tells them about himself and offers to help them explore using They/them pronouns if it makes them more comfortable, they also offer the possibility of talking to Tsunade about puberty blockers since Hinata hasn't got their period yet. He also encourages them to tell their team, knowing Kiba is trans and Kurenai will support them like she did him once she figured out. Hinata even hugs him in thanks and Kakashi awkwardly pats their head.
- Hinata does tell Kiba with the smallest sounding voice ever, Kiba is concerned at the "I want to tell you something, but please don't laugh at me", and when Hinata tells him finally he just grins and tells them not to worry because he's obviously trans too and even gets periods and so he kind of gets it and also they're his teammate, he also tells them to just tell Kurenai sensei because she knows about Kiba and is super nice about it.
- Shino is non-binary but just assumes everyone knows because he can definitely tell when people are trans so other people should be able to do the same, right?
- In fact, Shino clocked Kakashi the moment he met him (he also clocked his teammates) and so naturally during a training session one day he just approaches Kakashi (who's resting under a tree after a hypotensive crisis, but that's for the vignettes) and goes "they/he/it, yours?" And kakashi does a double take because surely he's not hearing the whole thing due to brain fog, shino repeats himself and Kakashi actually answers "anything as long as it's not she/her I guess" and shino just nods and leaves. Kakashi just sits there processing what's probably the weirdest interaction he's ever had in his life.
- The team actually learn Shino is trans during a routine mission, at that point Kiba and Hinata think only they know about Kakashi and Kurenai thinks only she knows about kakashi in the team, and so while shino overhears Kiba and Hinata having a conversation (k:"I don't get why you think I shouldn't talk to him in public about being trans" H: "we need to respect his privacy") he just blurts "what privacy, everyone knows Kakashi sensei is trans" which leaves the other 3 shocked and then they realise all of them actually knew. Kiba just asks "how did you know?" And shino tells them he just knows because he's non-binary too so he can tell when other people are trans plus he did ask his pronouns.
- Later, during training, Hinata will actually process that Shino said he's non-binary and will suddenly apologise for not asking for pronouns and if they've ever misgendered them and kiba will take advantage of the moment to come out and Shino just goes "thanks for sharing but I already knew you both were trans" and then promptly asks for pronouns and it's actually the first time Hinata asks them to use they/them pronouns because they were worried about "being too much of a bother" and Kurenai and Kiba actually tell them they need to be more assertive about their feelings and needs.
The relationship
- When they're about 15, Shino and Kiba have been in a romantic relationship for a while, nobody had noticed because they were a QPR already so all three of them had got closer. So the moment they catch those two making out by a tree after training is quite hilarious and involves kakashi asking Kurenai to pay up since they had bet on whether or not those two had something going on.
- the other teens drown them in questions "how long have you been together?" (6 months), "who confessed first" "who initiated the first kiss" (it was shino both times).
- As everyone keeps teasing Kiba and shino throughout the week, but mainly Kiba because he gets extremely flustered, Hinata's protective streak comes in full force and they finally scream at them to "stop bothering my partners!" And cue another round of awkwardness and comments like "how does it work with 3 people?" "If Kiba is gay and Shino is only into dudes (he's actually Achillean but nobody really knows that) then how come they're with a girl?" And at that it's actually Shino who steps in and tells them, in a vaguely threatening way that Hinata is their queerplatonic partner and they're being insensitive with the questions, and so cue everyone confused about the pronoun usage for Hinata and Hinata finally coming out while shrinking into themselves, Kiba threatening anyone who dares laugh or invalidate them and it turns out everyone is super chill about it, they even think it's cool and they apologise if they ever made Hinata uncomfortable with the pronouns and stuff. All in all a good acceptance even if it was a bit messy and stressful coming out.
