The hospital base-case (250 patients with severe COPD eligible for home Advanced-NIV) revealed cumulative 30- and 90-day savings of $402,981 and $449,101, respectively, for Advanced NON-INVASIVE VENTILATION versus both comparators. These savings were largely driven by reductions in 30-day hospital readmissions. For the payer base-case (100,000 patients), 3-year cumulative savings with Advanced-NIV were $326M versus no NIV, and $1.04B versus RAD-NIV. Payer savings were primarily a result of reduced admissions over the 3-year period. For both the hospital and payer, larger COPD patient cohorts were associated with greater savings.
This analysis supports the important role of home care in COPD and provides evidence for the economic benefits of home Advanced-NIV as part of a multi-faceted intervention program. Adoption of home Advanced NON-INVASIVE VENTILATION with AVAPS-AE presents an opportunity for hospitals to reduce COPD readmission-related costs, and for payers to reduce costs associated with managing severe COPD patients based on reduced admissions.
