re: your tags about knowing nothing while at film school- I feel SEEN. I got a film degree and know nothing about film. We're all faking it.
i have legit learnt NOTHING it’s so funny that I’m getting this useless degree AND will come out of it with the same amount of knowledge as a person who didn’t study it... quite sad
nonlinear-nonsubjective replied to your post: NOOOO WHAT DID THEY DOOOOO!!! WHERE IS THE...
I KNOW IM SO UNHAPPY. The entire scene fell so flat and it boils down to MAYBE IF THEY SHOWED MORE DAEMONS, A CHILD WITHOUT ONE WOULD BE MORE SHOCKING
YES YES YOU COULD ALSO SAY THERE WAS NO SOUL IN THE SCENE
i swear to god the fish was even more relevant after they took that decision. without the fish, it just looked like the kid was sleepy. THEY TORE HIS DAMN SELF APART, THEY TURNED AN INNOCENT CHILD INTO A CARCASS LOOKING FOR ITS BRAIN. HE IS SOMETHING SO UNNATURAL, SO EERY, THAT LITERALLY NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO COME CLOSE TO HIM BECAUSE HE’LL GIVE THEM PSTD

11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
Answered here! But I also read One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig that have been out a few years and quite enjoyed them. I will admit that they have some flaws, but they’ve got some very interesting concepts like a girl with a monster living inside her head, an eldritch forest, and I’m a sucker for a magic system that involves magical cards.
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
Over the last few years I’ve been setting myself a goal to read 30 books that I haven’t read before during the course of the year. I can reasonably meet that and even exceed it a little so it seems to be working out as a good number. I’ll probably stick with that since it gives me a bit of wiggle room to reread old favorites while still adding new enrichment. 😄 I was previously setting my goal at a much higher number, but I found in doing that I was forcing myself to finish a lot of books I wasn’t particularly enjoying just to meet that goal. I’d much rather spend my time reading things I’d enjoy and not pushing through something I’m not liking just to add to a tally.
I’d like to get through at least one or two more of the HoMe books this year, I’ve been kind of stuck on Lays of Beleriand which I feel silly about.
I’ve also been trying to get around to reading Northanger Abbey and Persuasion so I’m hoping to at least manage to get to reading at least one of them this year. Maybe Jane Eyre too if I can get in the right mindset.
Mostly I just would really like to find some new fantasy books to enjoy. I’d like a new series to fall in love with, it feels like it’s been awhile since I’ve found a really good one with multiple books, maybe this year will be kind?
Ask game: 1, 11, 18, and 25 ))
yay thanks! <3
1. Song of the year?
"Walking contradiction" by Sunny War i think. song i discovered this year and then listened to so much that i also went to see Sunny War in concert (she did not perform this song but oh well)
11. Something you want to do again next year?
i guess to the extent i've managed to cultivate any positive habits, i'd like to keep them up? doing my spine exercises, practicing russian and norwegian, socializing reasonably often, reading a lot
18. A memorable meal this year?
definitely recency bias here but a couple friends and i made an incredible meal a couple weeks ago with green onions and bittercress that we foraged ourselves, and then rice and the best miso soup imaginable
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one
still fond of my proto-orc oc Erya who's an early elf captured and tortured and used for Morgoth's orcification & breeding program. so as you might imagine she's having the worst fucking time. trying to get in her head to write her was tricky, actually the whole story was tricky, but i'm rly gratified by how her arc went in the end
[end of year asks from here]
7, 23, and 37? 💙
7. favourite musical you’ve been a part of (or one you want to be a part of if you haven’t participated in any!)
I was part of a children's musical called Drei Wünsche frei when I was eight! Nowadays, it'd be better for everyone involved if I stayed off stage and far away from any creative jobs backstage xD
23. favourite lyric from a musical
"Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise" from Les Mis 😭
37. favourite musical you’ve never listened to
Merrily We Roll Along! I've only heard one song from it (loved it), but everything I've seen of the Broadway revival looks very cool
Danke 💚
Hey just wanted to say- thank you for putting so much Doctor Who stuff on my dash every day. You're a delight <3
Aww yay! This comment put a smile on my face. It's my honor to share the wonderful content the DW fandom makes. The memes are hilarious, the art spectacular, and the fics never-ending. I hope you enjoy the rest to come!
What would you say your favourite musical is, for music alone? Not lyrics, just the way it all sounds?
Ohh this is not easy to answer! To be honest, I misinterpreted your question at first - I thought you were asking which musical would be my favourite if you retracted all vocals, and I had to judge based on the instrumentals alone. In that case, my answer would be The Lord of the Rings, to absolutely no one's surprise. There are many instrumental parts and underscored scenes, and the music is expressive and varied enough to reflect the plot extremely well.
But now that I've read your question again, I realise that the vocals may be included, just not the meaning of the lyrics. And this is where it gets complicated - I don't have a favourite genre of music in the first place, it's all vibes-based. If I like the music, but not the plot, a musical will never end up on my list of favourites, and the same is true for the reverse. If music and plot fit together, I can listen to music I wouldn't pay attention to otherwise, but good music can't save a bad plot. For me, they cannot be separated because they're closely intertwined and they depend on each other. So I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your question :/ as soon as I know the plot behind the music, I can no longer evaluate it based on the music alone.
