I've mentioned Nonsuch Park previously as the site of Nonsuch Palace. Built by Henry VIII to be 'no such place' it was finally sold off for building materials for gambling debts of Barbara Villiers. She was the Countess of Castlemaine, the principal mistress of Charles II who rivalled the Queen until she was shunted off to Nonsuch Palace as Charles favoured younger mistresses. What I never realised, until recently (it is not on the noticeboard), that a key part of history happened here when the Treaty of Nonsuch was signed on 10th August 1585 between Elizabeth 1st and Dutch rebels against Spanish rule. It resulted in the formation of the Dutch Republic and was a spark for the Anglo-Spanish war between Elizabeth and Philip of Spain that ultimately led to the Spanish Armada. #Nonsuch #nonsuchpark #nonsuchpalace #barbaravilliers #treatyofnonsuch (at Nonsuch Palace) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeGiSr0DzL_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
