Spring is in the air. My local Peregrines look like they are soon to nest. The Grey Herons are also nesting. Marsh Marigolds are flowering in my pond, a real sign of spring. Chiffchaffs have also just turned up with the latest mild spell (if a bit wet!) and are calling. #spring #peregrine #peregrinefalcon #peregrinefalcons #greyheron #marshmarigold #wildlifeponds (at Ewell) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp7WVqzjfTz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Waterloo is my mainline station in London and I always try to take the time to walk across Waterloo Bridge. To enjoy the views up river (towards the London Eye and Westminster) and down river,(towards St. Pauls). And listen to Waterloo sunset by the Kinks. #waterloobridge #waterloosunset (at Waterloo Bridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp3SOVpj1Eq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Some views of Bushy Park, with Fallow Deer, including a white stag, and Red Deer. The Royal Parks around London are great open spaces and excellent for wildlife. #bushypark #fallowdeer #reddeer #royalparks (at Bushy Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp1AGQSj3lt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On the Silverseas 'Deep South' Antarctic cruise, it was a privilege to work with Peter Harrison and Shirley Metz of Apex. Peter is the expert on seabirds, writing and illustrating Seabirds: An Identification Guide in 1983. And his updated book, Seabirds, The New Identification Guide, came out, tecently after years of hard work. Shirley was the first woman to ski to the South Pole in 1989. Furthermore, Peter and Shirley have raised lots of funds to help conserve Seabirds, and they have been involved with a lot of the projects. On the Silver Endeavour managed to do the whole inside passage and The Gullet down to Marguerite Bay both ways. And get to 68 degrees 46.230 minutes south. #thegullet #antarcticexperience #antarcticwildlife #antarcticpeninsula #margueritebay #margueritebayantarctica #silverseacruises #silverendeavour#antarcticcircle #antarcticcircleexpedition (at The Gullet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpOOCykuRTJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Stonington Island, Marguerite Bay. Home to the US East Base (with Byrd 1939 to 41, then Ronne 1947-48 .. that included the first two women to winter in Antarctica, Edith Ronne and Jenny Darlington). And the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) base E, 1946 to 1950, and 1960 to 1971. They could access the smooth part of the glacier and use dogs and sledges to get onto the polar plateau. Today the glacier has retreated and no longer reaches the island, and dogs are no longer in Antarctica. #antarcticexperience #stoningtonisland #margeuritebay #silverseacruises #silverendeavour (at Stonington Island, Antarctica) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpK-pflOWlc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Glyptonotus! Really pleased to find a Glyptonotus isopd in a rock pool. These are giant isopods in Antarctic that take the niche of crabs. This one is half the size they can get to, and it like something out of Alien! And the Alien link goes further. I am not sure if it was still alive, but the body cavity was full of small parasitic amphipods that start to eat from the inside whilst the isopod is still alive! #glyptontus #silverendeavour #silverseacruises #antarcticexperience #antarcticwildlife https://www.instagram.com/p/Co7JdvquDrj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
On D'Hainaut Island, Mickkelson Harbour. Trinity Island, where there is an Argentine refuge hut, the Chilean navy has recently (since my last visit), erected a navigation marker! #mikkelsenharbour #silverseacruises #silverendeavour #antarcticexperience (at Mikkelsen Harbour, Antarctic Peninsula) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co2Z0PHu3UB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Outside the Larsen hut where the crew of the 'Antarcti' ship were forced to over winter on Paulet Island when the ship was crushed and sunk in the ice on Feb 12th 1903. Most of the Adelie Penguins have gone from the rookery, so it was easy to walk to the hut, and some staff got to the grave of the one crew member who died here. The loss of the 'Antarctic' meant three men dropped off at Hope Bay also had to make a stone hut and overwinter. And the overwintering party of 1902 at Snow Hill, with Nordenskjold, that they were meant to pick up, had to spend a 2nd winter in the hut at Snow Hill. Do read up about this amazing Antarctic adventure! #pauletisland #nordenskjold https://www.instagram.com/p/CozxEKFuKdS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Brown Bluff. Most of the Adelie Penguin chicks have gone, and adults are still to come back to moult, leaving the Adelie Penguin rookery empty. But plenty of curious Gentoo Penguin chicks, many resting with the warmth of a sunny morning. #Gentoopenguin #gentoopenguins #gentoopenguinchick #silverseacruises #silverendeavour (at Brown Bluff, Antarctic Peninsula) https://www.instagram.com/p/Couut9NO_qJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Deception Island on quite a nice day weatherwise. And walked up to the viewpoint behind the hanger. With only one almost hidden entrance into the caldera of the volcano, it was named 'Deceptive Island' by the sealers in the 1820s. Jules Verne used the sealers description of Deception in 20,000 Leagues under the Sea as the basis for the hideout of the Nautilus submarine (in the novel I think he has an underwater entrance into the flooded caldera). Although sunnier days are not so common as overcast days, Deception will always be a special place for me to remember. I was there when my Dad died on 9th December 2007 so it is always a time to remember lots of happy memories, and shed a tear. He took me to see the film '20,000 Leagues under the Sea' when I was a kid, and I loved the story. So I like to think I am in Jules Verne story when I am in Deception Island. Thanks Dad for encouraging my sense of adventure, and for that crazy sense of humour I inherited from you! #Deception #deceptionisland (at Deception Island, Antarctic Peninsula) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoP8qzFu4_w/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
