Working on my non-textile project for school. Cannot use any fabric, leather, etc. The base of mine is made of plastic shower curtain. Despite how awful this was to work with, I think the corset came out pretty alright. Encuentros is a yearly meeting of the Chilean scientific community. In 2013, it took place at the MIT Media Lab in Boston, MA.
I was commissioned to design a custom fabric, to be fashioned into ties and scarves to commemorate the occasion.
I also designed an inspirational look, inspired by the DNA Micro Array, used by scientists to measure the expression levels of large numbers of genes simultaneously or to genotype multiple regions of a genome. The exuberant look is hand-woven from pipe cleaners and expresses both the painstaking work undertaken by researchers and the sense of possibility for scientific advancement and medical breakthroughs.
