Piercing blue eyes looked up to admire the insignia emblazoned on a black flag hoisted high and snapping in the breeze. It wasn’t the usual symbol of skull and crossbones favored by pirates but instead, his own personal symbol - a half star with wings on one side, all in white, enclosed in a circle of bright red, glowing in the light of a full moon. He'd designed it himself. He wasn’t a hero and he wasn’t a renegad. Maybe a bit of both, his life changed by circumstances beyond his control.
The flag faded away, replaced by an image of a cocky smile and laughing brown eyes, windblown curls of black. He was struck by a sudden pang of longing so strong, it left him breathless, aching for something he couldn't put a name to.
