📖 Tell a story - Story time: Sooo when I was in the 4th or 5th grade our class had Dare (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) on Fridays. Every Friday a policewoman came and spoke to our class. So my birthday happened to fall on a Friday and I told the policewoman “it’s my birthday.” Now I’m excited about my birthday because I know it’s not being celebrated at home. My foster parents didn’t have much money to spare and didn’t care anyway so they weren’t going to go out of their way. School is the only place I had to bounce about happy about it even if I had to put up with all the rude/backhanded comments about being poor.

So I’m talking to the policewoman excited about my birthday even though nothing is going to happen. She just smiles at me and says, “well what kind of birthday cake do you want to have?” I tell her chocolate and I lie to this woman’s face that my mom is going to make me one. One of the rude ass kids in my class laughs and says, “You don’t even have a mom. Angela’s a liar.” A bunch of kids are laughing now. I’m embarassed but I smile through and continue to lie saying I’m going to have a chocolate cake for my birthday.

The policewoman leaves our class because the lesson is over. Hours later she returns with a chocolate cake and wishes me a happy birthday. Now all those kids laughing at me earlier are like “yeah yeah there’s cake” thinking we’re going to spend the last 30 minutes of class in an birthday party. The teacher asked me if I wanted to cut the cake and I scalped the entire class with one sentence. “No I’m taking it home.”

Those kids looked devastated. They really expected me to share with them after they had embarrassed and made fun of me. Even the teacher seemed shocked but she didn’t try to force or coerce me into sharing either. I took the cake home kids bugging me the entire bus ride. I get home and what do you know my foster parents forgot it was my birthday, asked me why I had a cake and where did I get it from. My younger brother and I ate cake for dinner. I will never forget it.
