Even if it was only for the evening, Abe was happy to pretend they were back to being university students, when everything was simpler. When he didn’t have to think about taking over his mother’s companies and her insistence on him joining the town council when she retired. When he could think about moving to the city instead of going home. Hanging out with Callum had been a welcome relief when everyone reminded him of his familial responsibilities. It was nice to feel that way again for an evening.
Nora: No more waiting around!
Nora: If you're not his priority, he shouldn't be yours.
Nora: "Danny had his chance."
Eric: "Thanks for inviting me over. It's good to see you."
Nora: "You too! Come inside. I've got a movie picked out for us."
Eric: "I had a great time."
Nora: "Me too, but I'm an hour late for work..."
Eric: "Can I walk you to the bus stop?"
Callum tapped his shin with his foot, and Abe looked up at him. His boyfriend flashed him a subtle smile, as if to thank him for coming, or to say ‘See, it’s not so bad, right?’. Abe wasn’t sure which.
In any case, Abe smiled softly back, not willing to break the easy vibe they’d fallen into in the ratty living room they were currently hanging out in.
He assumed it might be the latter, since he’d certainly seen Callum direct similar irritated glances toward Roman when they were at Uni, and that was the only other person Abe had seen Callum actively dislike. Still, Callum was able to hold a conversation with the other man as if they were friends, he just didn’t go out of his way to do so.
If Abe was honest, he was a little jealous. Callum made friends so easily, and Abe didn’t understand how he did it. Nonetheless this new group of people were pleasant, and at least attempted to include him in the conversation. Even if he was sitting on a folding chair with a bunch of strangers in the middle of the city, surprisingly, it wasn’t having any effect on his good mood. At least it wasn’t yet.
For the first time since they’d left the university, it was almost as easy as it had been back then. For half a moment, Abe wasn’t thinking about how much he’d fucked everything up in his life.
Abe had chosen to sit in the most uncomfortable chair in Max Tremblay’s And Danny Button’s living room. He was consistently surprised by how many friends Callum actually had. Where Abe struggled to make any friends at all, Callum could make friends with almost anyone. When he’d mentioned hanging out with Callum’s friends that morning, he’d expected his boyfriend to make plans with the people they’d regularly hung out with while they were in school, but Abe only knew Mary here.
Callum had explained that he and Max had been friends for years back when he was younger, just like Mary, so it made sense that they’d all hang out. Danny and his fiance were apparently newer members to the group. He hadn’t missed the fact that Callum seemed less inclined to talk to the dark haired man at the end of the couch. Abe wasn’t sure if his boyfriend didn’t like Danny, or just didn’t know him.
Wedding time!
