thank you to @noragami-ss-16 for this wonderful event!
Now there was the matter of the high school reunion. For some reason Yato had been dragged into the organization committee. For Ebisu who was in charge of the reunion hall and decorations, this was no problem. He understood to a certain extent how to control Yato who was working in his group. However, he knew all hell would break forth when Takemikazuchi was put into his group as well. Takemikazuchi and Yato together were the perfect disaster recipe. And what was worse, Takemikazuchi refused to do anything without his editor, Kiun. Yato threatened to drag his own editor, Kazuma into the fray. But Kazuma was helping Yato’s younger brother, Yukine, study. So that was a no go. This should have relieved Ebisu but Yato started to turn to Ebisu for support saying that Takemikazuchi had Kiun. Not that Kiun was actually supporting Takemikazuchi. He was more like speaking against the other. Not that that mattered to Yato. In the end, Takemikazuchi had someone on his side and that was supposed to be unfair. Ebisu kept his temper in check. He was a Child Care worker. He could handle their child like mindsets, grown men though they were. However, when they were in a cake shop with the food group and they started screaming at each other over what kind of cake would be better, Ebisu snapped.
“Alright, that’s it, both of you. Come with me.” Ebisu thundered dangerously, grabbing their wrists and starting to drag them out of the shop. “And you stay here Kiun otherwise Yato will not listen to me.” Ebisu said flatly. He pulled them out of the shop and then glared at both of them. “Now both of you will cooperate for this one week. Do you hear me? You can slaughter each other once this week is over. If you do not, I will tell very very important secrets to some people. For example, Takemikazuchi, I will send Kiun the names of all the women you have even frolicked with your entire life. Yato, I will reveal your secret photo collection of Hiyori to both her and Yukine. You do not have a choice in this. Either you get along, or I will do what I’ve said I will. Am I understood?”
Yato and Takemikazuchi looked utterly terrified. Needless to say, although they were bitter enemies, they were very, very good friends of Ebisu and Ebisu knew plenty of their dirty secrets. He didn’t want to have to resort to blackmail, but if he had to, he would. There was a reason he was called the ‘God of Bargaining’ amongst his co workers.
“Am I understood?” Ebisu repeated with a raised eyebrow. Yato and Takemikazuchi scrambled to respond, saying they wouldn’t fight again throughout the rest of the week. Satisfied, Ebisu permitted them to go back into the cake shop.
“Well, what was that about?” Ebisu heard Kiun ask.
“N-nothing.” Was Takemikazuchi’s shaky answer. Ebisu smirked to himself and turned to Yato who had his face pressed against the glass of the cake display box.
“So, which cake would fit the aesthetic of the reunion hall, Ebisu?” Mayu asked. If she would have been allowed to, she probably would have baked the cake herself, but the heads of the organizing committee wanted a cake bought from the best shop in town.
“Oi, Yato, Takemikazuchi, which one would be better?” Ebisu asked, looking at the two manga artists. Ebisu wanted to hear their opinion since they were professional artists. Yato peeled himself off the glass and turned to look at Takemikazuchi who looked at him as well. Both frowned sourly at each other for a moment before Takemikazuchi walked over and took a look at the cakes next to Yato.
“This chocolate one.” Both of them said at the same time, pointing at the same cake. Ebisu blinked in surprise. Both of them looked at each other, wide eyes.
“Why you! I pointed at that first, don’t go around copying me!” Yato snapped.
“Oh no…” Mayu sighed.
“Hah? What are you insinuating here? I’ve been looking at that cake since we walked into the shop-” Takemikazuchi raised his voice,
“Ehem…” Ebisu said in a deadpan voice. Both Yato and Takemikazuchi froze, going utterly silent. “So, the chocolate one?” Ebisu asked, with a grin. When kept quiet, Yato and Takemikazuchi were actually pretty similar. Although, socially both of them were different kinds of messes. Both Yato and Takemikazuchi nodded slowly. Ebisu saw Kiun covering his mouth and trying not to laugh. Ebisu wanted to laugh too, but he knew if he did, the two idiots would just get more pissed off. “Well then, you heard them.” Ebisu turned to Mayu and her group. Mayu nodded.
“Thanks, Ebisu. How are the decorations coming around?” Mayu asked curiously.
“Well, we do have a couple of things down, but thanks to these two, we haven’t really gotten anywhere.” Ebisu explained, jerking his thumb at Takemikazuchi and Yato who were glaring each other down and probably trying to imagine themselves strangling each other.
“Oh well, sucks to be you.” Mayu said as she ordered the cake and wrote down the details needed.
“Oh no,” Ebisu said looking at the utterly perfect cake the two of them had chosen and back at both of them shoving foreheads against each other because they thought Ebisu wasn’t looking. “I think we’re going to be just fine.” Ebisu turned fully in their direction and both of them instantly straightened up and turned away from each other. “Yato, Takemikazuchi, we need to go and look up the flowers.”
“Flowers?” Both Yato and Takemikazuchi cried out.
“You can’t expect me to choose those!” Takemikazuchi said.
“We’re shounen manga authors! I don’t even buy flowers for Hiyori!” Yato pointed out.
“It’s impossible!” Both finished, looking very unhappy. Ebisu thought his eyes would bug out of their sockets. Kiun’s jaw dropped. For the first time in the fifteen years that he had known the two of them, Yato and Takemikazuchi were syncing perfectly. Regaining his composure, Ebisu straightened up.
“Not to worry, I’ll be with you. And any slacking will not be allowed.” Ebisu put his gloves back on and they headed out into the rain with their umbrellas. The Florist wasn’t far from the cake shop. That was the advantage of being in a small town. But it also meant that there wasn’t really much to choose from. Ebisu pushed open the door and entered.
“Oh, are you all arranging the reunion?” The shop owner Tsuyu asked. She was known as the most beautiful woman in town. Often called a Plum Tree Kodama because she always seemed ethereal and always had plum blossoms in her hair. She somehow always managed to keep every one of her flowers alive and well at any time of the year. “Well, what flowers would you children like?” And no one knew her actual age because she always managed to look the same.
“We’ll just take a look at the flowers and then we’ll choose.” Ebisu said with a friendly smile.
“Take your time!”
“Now, I am well aware that both of you are manga artists and not interior designers. However, you strive to make your art look good and balanced, don’t you?” Ebisu asked. Both mangakas nodded firmly. “Imagine you’re planning the perfect party scene your manga before the villain comes and trashes everything. Do you understand?” Their eyes widened in realization.
“Understood!” Takemikazuchi said.
“Let me see, something that looks perfect in the room and Lord Inari would want to cut to pieces…” Yato muttered as he started to look around.
“You’re pretty good at getting them to act, Ebisu.” Kiun said with an amused look on his face as he watch both full grown men scramble around the shop, making wild exclamations and commenting on flowers meanings they had looked up on their phones.
“Well, I have been their close friend for a very long time. The three of us have been in the same school our entire lives.” Ebisu shrugged. “Although I work in a different city now, I still know those two idiots inside out.”
“Hm...I’m assuming you blackmailed them to cooperate?” Kiun asked. Ebisu chuckled.
“I did.” Ebisu sighed. “But you know, if they weren’t always at each other’s throats, they could be capable of so much together. I don’t know why the two of them stayed back in this town when they could have conquered the whole world if they wanted to.”
“Maybe that’s why they stayed back.” Kiun said. “I’m not sure about Yato, but I know Takemikazuchi is very talented. He could be in all kinds of places. But the more awe inspiring a person becomes, the more they seek a normal and simple life. I’m sure there are attachments and small things they simply cannot leave behind.” Kiun fixed his eyes on Takemikazuchi who looked at the Dragon Snaps with a contemplating look on his face.
Oh… Ebisu thought before he smiled lightly.
There was no way, Yato would ever be able to leave Hiyori. And now that Yukine had started to go to the special arts school, Yato would never leave town unless both of his loved ones decided to leave as well. It was a small town, but both Takemikazuchi and Yato lived very happy lives.
“These!” Yato ran over with an armful of Baby’s Breath.
“I got these!” Takemikazuchi came over with an armful of white roses.
Ebisu sighed.
“You guys, please don’t start fighting over this. Like honestly, this is Tsuyu san’s flower shop-” Ebisu started.
“What are you talking about Ebisu?” Yato asked.
“Both of these flower have to be arranged alternatively in the right way. If it doesn’t look perfect enough, no villain would actually pay it attention and want to destroy it.” Takemikazuchi pointed out.
“Think a little why don’t you?” Yato huffed.
Ebisu felt stunned once again. If they could sync so well, why on earth did they fight? Because they were similar? Ebisu watched Yato chatter excitedly about what Baby’s Breath meant and why he as a villain would want to destroy the flowers.
No, it’s because they have the mentality of children.
“Alright then, so how would you two design the hall and how many bunches would you need?” Ebisu asked, showing them the layout of the hall. Both of them excitedly explained things to Ebisu and Kiun. They of course refused to look at each other and talk to each other, but their thoughts were in perfect harmony. Each of them held pencils, practically drawing on the completely empty layout. They put in tables, chairs, flowers, curtains, the decorations on the stage, the podium, how the food and drinks should be arranged and what the ID cards should look like. Ebisu was speechless. He had literally just watched two of the most popular shounen mangakas sketch out an entire party on a piece of paper right before his eyes.
“You both work well together.” Kiun commented.
“Hah?” Both of them snarled, venom in their voices.
“OK! I’m going to order the flowers.” Ebisu cut in quickly. He stood up, since they had been sitting on the ground of the shop and sketching. Tsuyu was gently cutting the stems of some daffodils. “Tsuyu san, we’re ready to order the flowers.” Ebisu said, well aware that right behind him, Takemikazuchi and Yato were sending each other murderous glares. Ebisu explained things to Tsuyu and then they left the shop. “That’s all for today. Tomorrow, please meet me at Mayu’s cat cafe at sharp ten o’ clock. We need to order the rest of the things tomorrow.”
------o------
“So, how was your day, Yato?” Hiyori asked as she passed Yukine the bowl of sushi rolls. Hiyori had been Yato’s girlfriend for a couple of years now, but she still lived with her parents. But she often came over for meals and helping Yato out when he got super stressed with manga deadlines. Now that Yukine was also living with Yato, Hiyori had started coming over more to take care of Yato’s little brother when Yato could not. Hiyori was a doctor working at her own parents hospital, so when Yukine needed help, she could come over if she wasn’t desperately needed.
“Ugh...let’s not talk about my day. Ebisu forced me to get along with that Take!” Yato snapped, beer can in hand.
“Takemikazuchi san is not someone bad. You should stop getting into arguments with him all the time.” Hiyori sighed.
“I’ve argued with Takemikazuchi san too, but he can be a reasonable person. So fix that attitude of yours, Yato. Then everything will be fine.” Yukine pointed out.
“Hey! Why can’t both of you just support me? That guy has Kiun to back him up!” Yato wailed.
“I bet a whole box of chocolates that he’s actually just there to make snide remarks at Takemikazuchi san’s stupidity.” Yukine deadpanned. “He’s not there to side up with Takemikazuchi san against you, so calm down.”
“I don’t understand why you have to be so stubborn, Yato. I know you both are rival mangakas, but both of you draw with different styles. You should stop comparing yourself to him.” Hiyori put a sushi roll into her mouth.
“Boohoo, you both don’t love me!” Yato whined.
“Yato!”
------o------
“Nah, the cloth has to be more silky.” Yato shook his head.
“And more white.” Takemikazuchi added as he shifted through the white and chocolate brown cloth that had been brought out for them to take a look at.
“It has to give you the feeling of the cake, you know. The kind of chocolate you want to melt into.” Yato explained.
“The white to match the serene and pure feeling the flowers give off. I would totally want to ruin that atmosphere.” Takemikazuchi grinned manically.
Not that any of us are actually going to point it out, but they really don’t have to keep going on about the villains from their mangas. Ebisu thought as he, Kiun and the shop keeper’s daughter, Aiha, watched the two idiots fuss over which cloth was better. It was the last item on their list to buy and Ebisu was about done with their whole villain theory. If it wasn’t getting them to get work done, Ebisu would have told them to scratch the theory a long time ago.
“Hey, Kiun, come take a look at this!” Takemikazuchi waved childishly at Kiun. Kiun trotted over and Takemikazuchi pressed a chocolate brown cloth to Kiun’s cheek. “See? It feels so soft! Like velvet chocolate, if you know what I mean! And it’s such a stark contrast to the white! It’ll be perfect!”
“Ebisu,” Kiun turned to look at Ebisu.
“I’m coming.” Ebisu walked over and examined the cloth.
“I got the white cloth!” Yato burst out excitedly.
“Very well then, Aiha chan, we’ll be choosing these.” Ebisu turned to the girl who was working on embroidery while keeping an eye on them. Evidently, she did not trust Yato and Takemikazuchi to leave her shop in one piece.
“Hai!” She called, hurrying over and not so gently prying the cloth out of Yato and Takemikazuchi’s paws.
Ebisu was still surprised at how smooth things were going. On the day they worked on having everything arranged, Yato and Takemikazuchi were particularly vicious. Not at each other, but at the workers who were arranging the hall. Holding a copy each of the final product of their drawing skills, Yato and Takemikazuchi didn’t let a single detail get missed. Both of them were already dressed for the party, but had dark circles under their eyes. Ebisu wondered why. They were properly communicating with each other, although still glaring at each other.
“This is the most peaceful one week I have ever had, trust me.” Kiun said, a happy smile on his face. “Ah, I could live this life forever…” Ebisu turned to Kiun. He was rather free at the moment, but that was because Takemikazuchi and Yato were making a huge fuss about perfection, so Ebisu wasn’t allowed to interfere. Not that he was complaining. This was going a lot better than he expected it to go.
“As in just outside or at work too?” Ebisu asked. Takemikazuchi and Yato rarely left home and therefore, Kiun and Kazuma usually stayed the entire day at their homes making sure they met their deadlines.
“Oh no, when he’s working, he’s as loud as always.” Kiun shook his head, a fond smile on his face.
“I see…” Ebisu nodded.
“And done!” Yato yelled in jubilation.
“Finally! Once this event is over, I’m ripping everything apart!” Takemikazuchi crowed.
“Excuse me, if anyone gets to play villain here, it’s me!” Yato snarled.
“What? You wanna have a go at it buddy and see which one of us survives as a villain?” Takemikazuchi asked.
“Both of you, stop! Have this argument later!” Ebisu shouted. “Now go quickly get refreshed. The event starts in two hours.” Ebisu said. Both grudgingly went to go get ready. Two hours later, the reunion had started and Yato and Takemikazuchi were nowhere to be found.
“I’ll go find them.” Kiun got up, putting down his glass of punch.
“Yeah, make sure they clean up if they’re covered in blood and bruises.” Ebisu called. “Strange, Yato isn’t the type to miss out on events like this.” Ebisu muttered to himself.
“Ebisu, the decoration is amazing!” Kinuha walked up to Ebisu with a glass of punch.
“Oh, thank you. But it’s mostly the work of Yato and Takemikazuchi.” Ebisu said. Kinuha’s eyes widened.
“They did this together? I don’t believe it!”
Just then Ebisu’s phone rang.
“Excuse me, I have to take this call.” Ebisu told Kinuha politely. He turned and accepted the call, putting his phone to his ear. “Yes, Hiyori?”
“Oh, Ebisu, sorry to bother you. I’ve been trying to reach Yato but he isn’t picking up his phone. Can you make sure he isn’t passed out somewhere?” Hiyori asked.
“Agh, this is why I kept telling him to stop the video call with Takemikazuchi san. Even if he is decorating the hall he didn’t have to stay up till five planning extra things.” Yukine’s annoyed voice crackled in the background. Ebisu thought he couldn’t be more surprised, but evidently he stood corrected.
“I’ll find him, Hiyori.” Ebisu told her. He cut the call and looked around. His phone rang again. This time it was from Kiun. “Did you find them?” Ebisu asked the moment he picked up the call.
“I found them, come take a look at the meeting room. This is something you’ll want to see.” Kiun’s amused voice said. Curious, Ebisu said he was coming and quickly headed to the meeting room. He pushed open the door and was met with a sight that would have probably made Hiyori and Mayu scream in delight.
Yato and Takemikazuchi seemed to have been discussing something, but were now asleep, heads resting on each other. Yato had drool coming out of his mouth. Kiun was chuckling softly.
“I’m taking a picture for blackmail later.” Was the only thing Ebisu said.
