Meet the Crew of “Skin Flick”!

Our awesome crew is what holds us together and helps the production run smoothly. Here are the bios of the amazing people who make up our crew:

Sharon MacDonald (Assistant Director, Stage Manager) 

After many years teaching in Island high schools, Sharon was invited to work on an ACT production and hasn't looked back.  Stage Manager for ACT's Shakespeare in the Park (Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet), Inherit the Wind, Little Shop of Horrors and The Dining Room;  director  (Lord Byron's Love Letter in Of a Certain Age) and minor acting roles (Doubt, Our Town).  Working for a living was never this much fun.

Afton Mondoux (Producer) 

Afton grew up in Northern Alberta and lived i Edmonton before she made the wonderful life choice to move to Prince Edward Island. Afton has been a member of act for several years participating on and off stage. She hopes very much that you enjoy the show. 

Terry Pratt (Assistant Stage Manager)

Terry was recently honoured with a lifetime membership in ACT for his contributions as actor, crew, board member, and director, the latter including five Gilbert and Sullivan operas, two Shakespeares in Cotton Park, and Murder in the Cathedral with the Indian River Festival.  His most recent direction was of The Dining Room, staged in part as chamber theatre in private homes. 

Cyril Armstrong (Set construction; crew)

Cyril is an honorary life member of ACT and a member who has been involved on stage, behind stage, set design and construction. He has even helped sewing costumes, and once directed a one-act play. In this production, he has been pulled (kicking and screaming) toward set construction and stage crew (actually it was a more of a mournful shake of the head when I asked him).

 Brian Matthie (crew)

  Theatre is a newly discovered passion for Brian.  He has been involved with two productions since 2016 in Summerside with the Harbourfront Players (both back stage- on Lights, Camera, Island- and as an actor- Norm Foster's Bedtime Stories) , currently working on a third production as ASM (another Norm Foster work, Maggie's Getting Married). Moved to Charlottetown June of 2017 and have been involved as a stage hand (The Shop Around the Corner)  and actor (Raised on TV2)  with productions at The Guild.

Rehearsals have begun for Skin Flick and man, this cast has chemistry. Usually there’s a period of adjustment, when a new group of people who have been brought together have to get used to each other and find their rhythm, but not this time. It’s evident from watching them, even this early on, that they’re already comfortable together. They follow each other’s leads and Foster’s fun dialogue sounds at home in their mouths. Taking in a rehearsal is a treat!

Watching a play come to fruition from beginning to end is a bit like watching a kid grow up in fast forward. It goes from an idea, a proposal, to reality over a mere few months. Growing up in the theatre, I’ve always loved the process whether I’m in the play or just around it. Watching it start on wobbly legs as the blocking rehearsals begin, then gain momentum once the cast is off-book and scripts are no longer in hand. Shoulders relax, projection improves and people start to truely become their characters. Soon, the Director stops intervening and the run-throughs develop a new flow, a new ease and natural rhythm to the conversations. The scenes cease being rehearsed and start being lived. It's magical.

Opening Night

Opening night saw a small but enthusiastic crowd that came out to Sadie Flynn Comes To Big Oak. The actors were in the zone and the crowd laughed their impeccable arses off.

I’m doing both lights and sound on this one since it’s light’s up/lights down at the end of the scenes and the sound effects are just a few that is sprinkled between the acts. So, it gives me a good challenge of reaching across the board towards the end of the play when lights come down and some scary sounds pop in for a few seconds here and there.

For those who don’t know the Canadian playwright, Norm Foster. He’s considered to one of the most produced playwrights across Canada. Foster had discovered his talent for writing while he was a host for a morning radio show in News Brunswick. He wasn’t interested in the theatre until he went with a friend to an audition and landed his first acting job in the stage production of Harvey where he was caste as Elwood P. Dowd.

Foster’s imagination was sparked and he wrote several plays that were produced at the the Theatre New Brunswick. He wrote Sinners and followed that up with The Melville Boys. Foster has more than fifty plays constantly being produced on professional stages and amateur theatre. He’s basically referred to as the Neil Simon of Canada.

News on "Looking" Audition

WOOT! Even though I didn't get a part in "Looking" by Norm Foster it was a good audition experience for me. I knew going into the audition that I was up against some big local talent. Six men where vying for a spot as one of the two men in the play. Though I know my chances are slim, I wanted to go out and audition anyway. I did the read through and put my effort into it. And, last night the director of "Looking" told me the news she did say I did a good read, an improvement over the previous year! Gives me hope that one of these years I'll nab a lead. I got to keep hammering away at it.

The Auditoner!

Last night I went to audition for "Looking" a play by Norm Foster. I went in knowing that my chances were pretty slim to get a role, I've been at this since 2010 and each year I get a little better on stage. ;) Looking is the story of four middle-aged singles who are seeking relationships. They meet on a blind date and the play follows their progress through the following weeks. It has a small cast (two men and two women) and it's a very character driven play. So, considering that six men showed up at the theatre to audition, I say me landing a part in the play is like my chances of winning the Lotto.

Programme for The Foursome. Done in three and a half hours with another 40 minutes for text corrections and rearranging that evening. Quite happy with the time taken vs. quality of the end result.
