Cells at Work Appreciation Week Day 4: Favorite/OC Bacteria/Virus

Honestly, I really couldn’t decide which canon bacteria I liked the most, probably a tie between Campylobacter, the lactic acid bacteria, or one of the oppurtunistic bacteria, so I just made up my own and called it a day.

This is Snakey the Strep, or Streptococcus salivarius, subspecies thermophilus. Snakey is a VERY special boy, because despite being a streptococcus, he’s quite different from other streptococcus species(about 3000 years of evolution/development different, in fact). Not only is he harmless, he is quite important to the gut’s normal flora and he’s a very good little noodle(like, seriously, look this guy and his relatives up, the organism is incredible). He enjoys hanging out with other lactic acid bacteria, warm snuggles, sleeping, and yummy lactose. 

Also random fact about S. salivarius thermophilus: if anyone saw my reblog of my one post yesterday where I was talking about experiments with using bacteria to treat or slow the progression of cancer, this is one of the bacteria that might be used. It’s not one of the more effective ones they’ve found, but it is the safest and could also be used to help manage GI issues caused by chemotherapy.

I’ve done a research about normal flora , and I figured out that normal flora isn’t a name of bacterium booom :D . Here my research is ; ’- Normal flora consisit of a few eucaryotic fungi and protists but bacteria are the most numerous of total normal flora. -There are two types of flora : resident flora and transient flora . -Resident flora : have role in maintaining health -they maybe pathogens under certain circumstances ;If transported into circulation or other tissue Resident flora prevent pathogenic action of transient one by mechanism called “bacterial interference ” which isn’t clear maybe competition for receptors or binding sites on host cells or competition for nutrients . -every organ of body have specific m.os in specific numbers which if they become in large numbers turn into pathogenic -Foetus in uterus ➡ free from m.os , during birth , infant is exposed to vaginal flora . few hrs , oral and nasopharygeal flora develop and In a day or two flora of Lower intestine appear .’ Challenge “everyday research”
