Ive read the entire Poetic Edda last summer and now Im reading book where the author just retells the myths and. Well I Simply Don't Remember Skathi Throat Fucking Njord.

brooooo they found almost a kilo of iron age gold artefacts in Southern Denmark last year (they only just revealed this to the public a few days ago)

Most of its bracteates and they're of really high quality both minerally and in terms of craftsmanship.

They're dated to around year 500, so well before the beginning of the Viking Age (which is usually dated as beginning in 793 with the Viking raid of Lindisfarne).

This one has a portrait of Odin on it. Asatru (as opposed to broader Germanic religion) is usually dated to have begun with the Viking Age and I'm not sure we have any earlier reference to specific gods in Scandinavia than this.

(We know it's Odin because some of the runes on it say "The High One" which is a name for Odin)

One articles mentioned there being a bracteate with an imprint of Emperor Constantine as well and I think this is it

They're speculating, given the large quantity of gold and the approximate time period as well as other finds from this time period, that this was offered in an effort to bring back the sun during year 536 in the Late Antique Little Ice Age which has often been pointed to as a possible inspiration for the Ragnarok myth of the end of the world being preceded by the beginning of an eternal winter.

It’s DONE!  Finally!  My digital painting of the Norse goddess Hel!  I really hope you like it, that my goals for its look and mood and effect were achieved.

Archaeologists have discovered that two viking age skeletons are closely related, either half brothers or uncle and nephew

One of the skeletons was already held by The National Museum of Denmark and the other one was held in Oxford until recently. The skeletons are now both held by the Danish museum for a new Viking Age exhibition.

They’re framing it like “family reunited after 1000 years!!” and on one hand man i’m emo thinking about someone dying far away from home being brought back and reunited with family in death, given the importance of that in Norse culture...

But then on the other hand just because they were closely related doesn’t mean they liked each other, what if they couldn’t stand each other but have now been doomed to lie face to face, even in death forced together by biology
