The workshop is finally starting to look like itself again. You sweep your broom across the floor, collecting the lost screws, wood shavings, and scraps of brightly colored wrapping paper into neat piles.
The yeti and the elves are off on a well deserved break, celebrating Christmas after another year well done. In the distance, you hear the elves laughing as they clink mugs of cocoa, the yeti stomping through the halls with booming cheer as the music ties it all together.
You didn’t mind staying behind. Someone has to get a head start on the morning cleanup. Besides; you like waiting up for him. As you work, you imagine how exhausted your husband will be when he finally comes home. Nicholas St. North never truly stops working, but Christmas always takes something extra out of him.
You’re so focused on your sweeping that you barely notice the shift in the air until warm arms slide around your waist from behind. You startle, then immediately relax, laughing softly as you recognise the familiar touch of your husband. “I still don’t know how a man your size can be so quiet.” You scoff playfully.
A low chuckle rumbles through North’s chest as he rests his chin atop your head. You lean into his touch, the smell of pine, cinders, fresh-baked cookies, and just the faintest hint of reindeer engulfing you like a warm, fuzzy blanket. Home, in every sense of the word.
“How was work?” You ask, resting your hands over his. “Work was good.” He rumbles contentedly. “Children very good this year. Kevin managed to stay out of trouble, and little Cindy sang beautiful song, almost brought tears to my eyes, eh!”
You hum, tilting your head slightly as he continues, hands warm and steady as you sway slightly side to side. “That sounds wonderful.” You smile softly. “Did old Jack S. manage to catch you this year?” North chuckles. “No, but he did get close.”
You turn in his arms to face him. You catch his half-lidded eyes, the usual spark, despite his smile, softened by the exhaustion finally catching up to him. “You should rest.” You murmur gently, running your hands over the fabric of his sleeves.
He raises a brow, that familiar spark managing to flash through his tired gaze. “Why would I rest when I can dance with you, eh?” Before you can protest, he twirls you across the cleared floor, imaginary music swelling between your shared laughter.
You try and stifle your smile, breathless, as you grip his hands. “We can dance later. Don’t make me get Sandy, Nicholas St. North.” You wave a playful finger in his face as he barks out a laugh, throwing his head back. “Ooohhh, full name~” He teases. “Am I in trouble?”
You smile mischieviously. “Careful. Remember, I have access to your list. It would be awfully easy to put that full name of yours on the naughty one.” North laughs even harder, the sound echoing through the workshop until you can’t help but join him, your laughter mingling with his until your sides ache.
Finally, he wipes his eyes and sighs dramatically. “Fine, I’ll go to bed. But only on one condition.” You cross your arms playfully. “Name your demand.” He leans in, forehead resting against yours. “You join me.” You can’t stop the smile that pulls at your lips. “Gladly.”
You share a quick, affectionate peck before lacing your fingers together and heading off to the quieter halls of the workshop. The lights dim behind you, and as you change into your soft, well-worn pyjamas, the early morning finally settles into quiet.
Before you know it, you are wrapped securely in North’s arms, his steady breathing brushing your ear as sleep starts to pull you under. “Merry Christmas.” You murmur, already drifting off. North kisses the top of your head, voice barely above a whisper. “Merry Christmas.”
