Skagos
Keep in mind this is just my head cannon, and will only be relevant to my fics. Majority of this will be pulled from my rear. Skagos is Old Tongue for stone. I imagine that sailing to the island, that all you can see are Rocky Mountain ranges that seem to over take the landscape (see imagine on right), which the rest is comprised of dense forests and small streams. Skagos is almost a time capsule, a snapshot of what the First Men were like when they first ventured south. They’re not like the Northron but also not like Free Folk. Like the Free Folk, they speak the Old Tongue and still continue practicing the old rituals that the North had long ago discarded. But since they were no longer nomadic, they have also adopted things such as written language and other cultural aspects that the Northron culture has. I picture their culture is very similar to Old Norse/Viking and Highlander ways when it comes to culture and interactions—steeped in superstitions and sacrifices to the Old Gods. Since there isn’t a comprehensive Old Tongue language created, I’ll just borrow Old Norse words most likely. Nobody in mainland Westeros comes to Skagos, but they don’t need to pillage/steal wives anymore since Wildlings will often sneak around the wall by sea. Some go to the mainland while others join the Skagosi on their island. That is how they’ve prevented inbreeding amongst the clans.
The 3 houses on the island are referred to as clans as well. Each house/clan brings their own unique culture and trade. Internal conflict is swiftly handled since they rely so heavily on each clan’s strengths to survive. Houses are not held as high importance as in the mainland. The small population makes it almost impossible to separate by class without inbreeding. So marriage alliances depends heavily on family trade/reputation and individual merits.
