Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. As an ally and advocate who happens to be HIV negative with a positive outlook for change, I will not be silenced by the pervasive stigma STILL associated with HIV/AIDS, especially in the Black community. Unfortunately, the "diverse" Black community continues to have one of the highest rates of incidence (the number of “new” cases) in the country. We have the "p-OWE-r to change this health disparity. In fact, we OWE it to ourselves and our respective communities. If you haven't been tested, please do and if you "KNOW" your status....POSITIVE or NEGATIVE, please take care of yourselves as well as others. We are ALL in this together. I had the privilege to serve as one of the keynote speakers @thedhvi-The Duke Human Vaccine Institute (Duke School of Medicine) commemorating World AIDS Day. The topic of my presentation was “ When Artivism Converges with Biomedical Research: The Intersectionality of the Arts, Activism & Science”. Before I began, I asked The Most High to use me as a vessel to inspire, affirm and challenge at least one person in the audience to remember their “why?” regarding their respective role(s) in ending HIV/AIDS. I’m relatively confident that my mission was accomplished. Artivism is creative illustrations of speaking truth to POWER on behalf of the “unseen” and “overlooked”. It’s difficult to “protect” who we don’t see and value. Sometimes, we have to serve as human easels, so others are seen, heard and valued.
