i think vampires won out over werewolves in like pop culture because werewolves cross the line into being too inhuman for most ppl. vampires are (in most media) kinda just like freaky humans. maybe they can turn into a bat or something but for the most part they are humans that drink blood and have some other general powers/abnormalities. werewolves on the other hand stray into a different, more complex territory. man vs beast. nurture vs nature. control vs impulse. these are all things you Can explore with vampires depending on your depiction (primarily control vs impulse), but they are all baked into the very nature of a werewolf no matter what direction you take it. even the most passive, human-like interpretation of a werewolf (like those that are sentient during shifts, or their wolf form is basically just a hairy human, etc) still grapples with these. there is no way to separate werewolves from the question of what, really, is the difference between humans and animals? between tame and wild? are you a man, a beast, or something entirely different?
this is also why they are one william times better than vampires
