Dr. Morocco Analysis

Asking for science... No other particular reason... I've been trying to analyze Dr. Morocco's character to figure out how he reacts in various situations. Right now, I've been particularly interested in when he's in situations where he's backed into a corner and needs to escape, whether literally or metaphorically, like needing to talk his way out of a business partnership or deal gone bad and the client wants revenge or something like that and he wants to save his own skin. Dr. Morocco is usually the one always in control whenever he's on-screen, bending and manipulating others to do his bidding. He rarely is outsmarted by anyone, it seems. He almost always comes out on top. But when he is bested, he appears to become flustered or even angry in extreme cases because he isn't used to getting the short end of the stick. I know he isn't above using dirty underhanded tactics to tip the scales in his favor. But would he also get down on his knees and beg for mercy if the situation was dire enough? Like if his life was on the line or something?

@gengar-pixel-2 I hope you don't mind the tag. You're more of an expert on Dr. Morocco than I am. What are your thoughts?

There's been a sudden uptick in Credits!readers which I find very amusing and confusing and whereareallyoupeoplecomingfrom??

In light of all that, it made me curious what a newbie reader is coming into without the now 7+ (wowie) year long wait for this fic's resolution which meant I re-read the entire thing and oof.

Okay so, I've got a bit of commentary I wanna share on Chapter 1 of Credits before I head off to head. Thoughts below the cut for those who care about that sorta thing!

The iconic ending line of Credits!Chapter 1 is Kokichi Ouma babbling and apologizing for "ruining Danganronpa". I was kinda being cheeky with Kokichi's timid and tearful behavior—it was meant to capture the fanon outlook on "Bonkichi" as a sorta pathetic crybaby, except here it is most certainly an act.

From his POV, the Shuichi pg!Kokichi is addressing is his long time friend/crush that he knows everything about. Prior to V3 the two had gotten into a fight leaving pg!Shuichi struggling between his desire to be on his favorite TV show of all time and making amends with his BFF. Knowing this, Kokichi attempts to make himself pitiful in order to tug at those heartstrings and invoke his Shuichi's habit of losing his composure when presented with Kokichi in tears.

Without going into it too much, Kokichi's line must mean that he thinks that he's "ruined" Danganronpa in some way, and he's trying to get ahead of it before Shuichi finds out. You'll notice that he drops the act pretty quickly in Chapter 2 when he realizes something is amiss in Shuichi's behavior and then his erratic turn when he learns the truth.

My Kokichi is one who slips into acts in order to get something. If he's acting pathetic, he wants to be seen that way to be underestimated or pitied or doted upon. When he becomes crazed and vicious, he is aiming to hurt and lash out to defend himself. It's all kind-of impulse and bid for control all at once, except his level of success depends on his audience and how fine-tuned he can get his masks.

I'd like to think that he isn't bothering with it too much with Credits!Shuichi because he's trying too hard not to crumple under the weight of his own heartbreak, but that's a tale for another time (aka the continuation of Credits, whenever that is.)

I've gone back and forth with Kokichi's stutter in my fics. It was very very prominent in the 2018-2023 version, probably to an unrealistic degree. It is my belief that Credits!Kokichi still has a bit of a stutter when he's emotional, but he's gotten better at masking it behind literal, stonewalling masks.

That and he knows when to layer it on thick.
