I’m always late for birthday gifts, but this is for @sesurescue!!! I’m sorry it took longer than anticipated!! It’s Papby because OF COURSE IT HAS TO BE PAPBY and I hope you’ll like it! ^3^ ♥♥♥
Grillby hated the cold.
How was that possible, one would rightfully wonder. He was made of fire after all. Could he even feel the cold?
What most monsters didn't know was that it was precisely because he was made of fire that he was particularly sensitive to the cold. His natural body temperature was way higher than fleshy monsters, so that meant that 'room temperature' was 'ice cold' for him.
Of course, living in a town such as Snowdin wasn't the best idea for his condition. Like its name suggested, it snowed all year long and the temperature was usually below freezing. Grillby hadn't always lived here, no. He was a native of Hotland, a much more suiting area for his type. Surrounded by lava, with an average temperature above any other areas in the Underground, it truly was paradise for him. Unfortunately, it hadn't been the ideal place to open his bar. There was already Muffet's famous bakery, and also MTT resort. Both establishment sold good food and drinks, and Grillby's bar just couldn't measure up to them. He had tried to associate with either of them, but was turned down each and every time.
His last resort was to simply move to another part of the Underground with less competition, and that was how he ended up in Snowdin. He finally got to open the establishment of his dreams, and over time, his bar became the place to be in town. At least half of the town's inhabitants were regulars now.
That didn't stop Grillby from hating every second spent outside of his well heated bar.
To be honest, if he had the choice, he would gladly live somewhere else.
Well... That wasn't completely true.
There was something, someone, that was keeping him from moving out.
"GRILLBY! ARE YOU FINALLY DONE WITH WORK?"
Papyrus. His lovely, enthusiastic, quirky and favorite boyfriend. They had began dating a few months ago, and Grillby had never been so happy in his life. The skeleton was the perfect boyfriend, he was caring, strong-willed, full of surprises, and cute. So, so cute.
"Yes, Papyrus, I just finished for the day."
"OH! DOES THAT MEAN WE CAN NOW SPEND THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON TOGETHER?" Papyrus asked, his eyesockets practically beaming with stars.
"Yes of course, babe. But not before I properly greet you," Grillby laughed as he pulled Papyrus in a hug and smothered his bony cheeks with little kisses. The skeleton's laugh echoed in the stillness of the snowy town.
Due to Grillby's busy working schedule, they couldn't go on dates very often, so they usually just met after Grillby's work and went for a walk in the forest. They both knew the woods by heart, but somehow Papyrus always managed to find new interesting things to do or see there. He would show Grillby his new traps, or talk about his ideas for future ones.
What the fire monster loved the most was when Papyrus talked about what he'd do after catching a human. All the other monsters he had talked with about humans falling in the Underground all said that as soon as the last SOUL was found, they'd bring it to Asgore and use it to break the barrier and be free. And Grillby had been the first to agree to this plan, but that was before he met Papyrus. The skeleton's plan was to take care of the human until they found a way to use their SOUL to break the barrier without sacrificing it. Nor any monster, for that matter. Papyrus said that it wouldn't matter how much time it would take to find a way to do this, that he'd take care of a human for another thousand years if must be. That over time, the human may even become his friend, and eventually his fan, because no one could resist the Great Papyrus. That over time, the human would see how living here wasn't that bad after all, and they wouldn't even want to leave. And they would all be living happily forever and ever.
Grillby couldn't believe how pure Papyrus was. He wasn't naive, no. He just... saw the world in such a positive way, it instantly melted away all of Grillby's darker thoughts. The fire monster was addicted to Papyrus' positivity.
It warmed his burning SOUL, and made him hate living in Snowdin a little less.
They were walking quietly on the snowy path to the ruins, Papyrus talking passionately about a new trap, when Grillby couldn't hold a blaring sneeze. It stopped them both right in their tracks.
And then Papyrus burst out laughing, his happy laugh echoing in the forest. It was contagious and soon, Grillby joined his bony boyfriend, clutching his sides.
"HOW DID YOU EVEN DO THAT?!" Papyrus tried to ask between two laughs. " YOU DON'T HAVE A NOZE!"
"Hey, I don't want to hear that from you. You're a skeleton, and yet you can make a tongue, right?" Grillby playfully answered, proving his point by bending toward the other's face and giving him a sweet kiss.
He had to break it faster than he would've liked though, because he felt another sneeze coming and he drew back in time not to spit on Papyrus.
"ARE YOU OKAY GRILLBY? DO YOU errr... NEED A TISSUE?" Papyrus was already looking for one in his inventory.
"No it's okay Papyrus. I'm fine. I just forgot to wear another layer of clothes today, that's all. I'll be more careful tomorrow," Grillby replied with a smile and took Papyrus' hand again, ready to resume their walk through the forest.
But Papyrus had already entered his thoughtful mode. His face was adorably pouting in concentration, until it suddenly brightened up and Grillby knew it was the sign he had an idea. Good or bad, that he didn't know yet...
Papyrus grabbed his red scraf and unwrapped it from around his shoulders to place it around Grillby's neck. Then, he looked at the fire monster and said with a smile, "THAT WAY YOU WON'T BE COLD ANYMORE!"
It took some time for Grillby to register what Papyrus just did, a burning blush blooming on his firey cheeks distracting him.
"B-but Pap, what about you?" he babbled out.
"LIKE YOU MENTIONED EARLIER, I'M A SKELETON MONSTER. THE COLD GOES RIGHT THROUGH ME! NYEH! Please don't tell Sans I just made a pun."
"But... It's your favorite scarf?" Grillby tried to argue.
"YES BUT YOU'RE MY FAVORITE MONSTER, AND I'D RATHER YOU BE WARM THAN HAVE MY SCARF," Papyrus declared.
Grillby didn't know what to say to that. He wasn't sure he'd have the voice to say anything anyway. So he just remained silent and brushed Papyrus' cheekbone delicately. He once again curled his arms around the skeleton's waist and placed a sweet kiss on his teeth.
After a while, Papyrus broke the kiss and rested his head on Grillby's shoulder.
"And besides," Papyrus whispered, " if I'm ever cold, you'll just have to keep me warm."
...Maybe Grillby didn't really hate the cold after all.
So I had this image in my head of Grillby wearing Papyrus’ scarf and decided to draw that, BUT THEN it seemed strange without a context. And so a fic happened. And I figured I should finally draw it while I was at it...
