i do think lucas sorta missed a step by focusing his conversation about attachment on romantic love bcs then everyone got stuck on the idea that jedi condemn feeling any emotions at all or basic human experiences like attraction. when attachment is like.... not being able to move on, when something changes. a long term friendship ended badly? well are you going to wallow in loneliness and despair forever or are you going to mourn it and move on? when someone you care about dies are you going to stay stuck in the denial stage forever or are you going to grieve and heal as the months draw on? your home is destroyed and you lose everything you own, circumstances allow you to start rebuilding your life in a new home, can you let go of objects that might have held a lot of personal meaning that you lost?

like actually the answers to those questions are quite straightforward and i think most of us would consider attachment to just be people failing to function and getting stuck in a moment in their life that they need to be able to move past, eventually.

but we have to forever discourse attachment rules being inhumane because everyone's so focused on their inherent right to fall in love that they miss the fact that's not even what attachment rules are ABOUT.

anakin's feelings for padmé in aotc aren't attachment, even he doesn't talk about his attraction/love being attachment in the film. but his need to keep hold of her to the detriment of everything around them including thousands of living beings (the jedi as a whole) or democracy as a concept, in rots, is attachment. his worry and fear for her are not in and of themselves evil. the way he allows them to control him, are.

That being said, I provide a suggested reading order to help track Caleb’s emotional and narrative progression. Chronological reading offers the clearest throughline; thematic groupings are there for focused deep dives. But of course, you don’t have to follow it strictly. Feel free to jump around.

Before the timeline properly begins, we only have scattered pieces of Caleb and MC’s early years—small mentions about the lab, the shelter, middle school, and high school. They’re iow not full memories, just fragments. But together they help fill in the world that existed before the Caleb we meet as adults.

Shelter/lab/Infold is vague era:

❀ Caleb establishes early protective patterns, positioning himself as the one who stays a step ahead and keeps you safe. “I’m Caleb. I’ll always protect you”.

❀ Caleb is Test Subject 002 in Ever’s experimental lab, where you/the MC also were experimented on.

❀ A researcher named Josephine (aka Grandma/Gran) adopts you and Caleb and hides him (and you..?) away, eventually settling in the Bloomshore District.

Middle school/high school:

❀ Fake dating for couple discounts.

❀ Caleb (subtly) gatekeeping your romantic space.

❀ While you write silly wishes on the graffiti wall, Caleb writes only your name.

Caleb allows the “you are his girlfriend” narrative to spread unchecked, reinforcing the protective-but-possessive ambiguity.

Time passes… Then it’s Caleb’s senior year.

𝟲. Pathless realms (anecdote)

Caleb deliberately cuts contact in a life-threatening situation.

Caleb is known to the Toring Cybernetics Institute (TCI), EVER’s research division specializing in human augmentation and human-machine interfaces, see Serpent’s Cast.

Time passes… Then Caleb works for the DAA.

Caleb’s protection becomes more forceful and emotionally loaded, revealing difficulty letting you exist outside his orbit.

Caleb still officially works for the DAA, spending his days training, assembling model planes, and thinking about “Miss Apple” aka you, see Crease.

𝟵. Longtime Yesterday

𝟭𝟬. Skyline

Caleb is again showing strain between treating you as a child and recognizing you as someone he can’t fully control anymore.

Time passes… Then you work for The Hunter’s Association.

𝟭𝟭. Main story/Under Deepspace ch. 4/Under Twilight story 1 to 3

Caleb shields you without hesitation, proving once and for all that protecting you isn’t something he does—it’s who he is. Even if it costs him everything. He dies. And so does Grandma.

ᴛʜᴇ ᴠᴏɪᴅ ᴀꜰᴛᴇʀ ʜᴇ ᴡᴀꜱ ɢᴏɴᴇ…

This section covers the period after the explosion, when Caleb is presumed dead. The main story, Serpent’s Cast, and Crease all contribute fragments here—not as direct interactions with Caleb, but as pieces that quietly expand his character and the world he left behind. And also the utter pain he’s in while being mecha modified.

Status: complete

Caleb is pulled from the rubble by Dr. Lucius, and is brought to the TCI. Caleb is at death’s door.

𝟭. Main story/Under Deepspace ch 4/ Under Twilight story 04 to 10

You are grieving the loss of Caleb and Grandma.

𝟮. World Underneath - Serpent’s Cast

Dr. Lucius proceeds to implant the Toring chip and replace Caleb’s right arm with a mechanical prosthetic.

Caleb “recovers”

𝟯. World Underneath - Crease

Caleb is appointed the new Fleet colonel on Dr. Lucius’s recommendation.

Caleb then departs on an extended mission into the Deepspace Tunnel as the Fleet’s new colonel.

ʀᴇᴜɴɪᴏɴ (ᴛʀᴀᴜᴍᴀ)

This section covers the period after Caleb returns and you finally reunite. The dynamic might look familiar at first—but it quickly becomes clear that the Caleb who came back isn’t quite the same one who left. Or is he?

Status: in review

One year after Caleb’s death, another explosion in the Cascade District in Skyhaven triggers you to go there to investigate. Caleb and Grandma are confirmed dead and you receive their death certificates from Linkon City Hall.

Caleb returns. Composed but immediately resumes tightly controlled protective behavior around you.

Caleb starts actively “managing” your movements “for your safety”

As Caleb’s actions escalate, he intensifies both his intimate caretaking and his control over your safety—ultimately pushing you away.

Couple of months pass. Caleb tries to text you, but you end up ghosting each other most of the time.

You find your way back to each other in quiet, nostalgic moments—reestablishing contact

You secure a mission that requires you to work with The Fleet aka alongside the Colonel.

𝟱. Lucid Dreams

Caleb finally admits he doesn’t know how to take care of you anymore, but he’s willing to lose himself—and risk losing you both physically and mentally by becoming EVER’s perfect weapon—to keep you alive and free from EVER, from the chip, from all the storms.

𝟲. Hidden Waves

As Caleb conceals his feverish and weakened state, the caretaker dynamic reverses… Revealing that his true weakness lies in his heart

As Caleb reveals the truth about his right arm, you choose to stay… and he anchors himself to you.

I call this section the “gege can’t, Caleb can” arc. Because during Lucid Dreams, while Caleb is supposedly memory-wiped, he starts testing boundaries that “gege” held back from. In other words: what gege can’t do… Caleb suddenly can.
