what's so bad abt jiraiya?
I'm gonna preface this with saying that I don't think Jiraiya's the worst character Naruto has to offer and that SOME of my hate comes from the fact that he is just very fun to hate on. If you like Jiraiya, that's fine. I really don't care about what positive things other people may take away from his character, beyond a lack of understanding.
I really don't find his recurring pervert gag funny and that makes most of his scenes uninteresting at best and disgusting at worst. There's something fascinating and oh so frustrating (to me) that despite all the weird and creepy interactions he has with other characters the narrative lionizes him and treats him as this great guy.
Aside from the consistently gross scenes, Jiraiya as a character is pretty inconsistent and downright boring. He lacks an "inner world," something more complex beyond surface level emotions. His backstory is very eventful but we don't gain insight into how he developed beyond "he got stronger" and "Orochimaru leaving made him sad." Still, this moment at the end of Part 1 is the closest I got to enjoying him as a character because it's the only significant moment where we see how his past effects his character in the present (and one of the only times we see him express care for Naruto).
The father-son bond he has with Naruto is only interesting to me when we get to see the effects his death has on Naruto. Sometimes it feels like the only reason Jiraiya gives Naruto the time of day is because he's Minato's son - because at points Jiraiya genuinely does not seem to give a single shit about him. Yeah, I think Kishimoto was going for the "tough love" angle but in my opinion that was executed a lot better with Kakashi and not so well here.
IDK I could go on but this is already getting really ramble-ly.
