Today i will keep going because tomorrow i will bake bread. right now i am sitting on my back porch with my feet slowly warming up the cold concrete and i am thinking that today i will keep going. right now my feet are cold trying to warm up the concrete that is still dark from snowmelt and there is poetry in the exchange in temperature. in the way my body is trying to warm the whole universe up, starting with the concrete of my back porch. in the way that i am so very small aginst the expanse of everything but the concrete isn’t as cold as it once was.
Today i will keep going because tomorrow i make bread, or maybe hamburger buns, and if i make hamburger buns my father will pull the frozen beef out of the basement freezer and make burgers on the back porch. It will make the whole house smell like bread and summer, fill the whole house with a nostalgia that will warm our bones from the inside out, and i will sit on the back porch and write poetry while he sets the burgers onto the hamburger buns i made.
Today i will keep going because tomorrow i will sit on the back porch and write poetry until i am warm as summer and the porch under my feet is also as warm as summer despite the last of spring’s snows tumbling in past midnight like puppies tripping over their own cloudbanks. Tomorrow i will keep going and the day after that i will make a friend laugh and the day after that i will warm up the universe as best i can with my body heat and the day after that i will be warmed in return. Today I will keep going, summer warm and spring cheerful, and watch the tulips in the corner of the yard ready themselves to bloom from the back porch.
