Personal thing, help if you can

I recently figured out, in the middle of a relationship, that I’m way closer to the aromantic part of the spectrum. Whenever he would be flirty or anything of the like I would get super uncomfortable. It’s like, I had a major crush on him, or at least I’m almost 100% sure I did, for two years, but once we actually got together I went out of my way to avoid him and get out of doing things with him. I broke off the relationship because I knew that both of us would just end up getting hurt, but because of the break up, he’s upset. Reasonably so… I couldn’t even do it myself. I’m kind of ashamed to say that I had one of my friends do it for me because I couldn’t stand to do it myself…. I still want to be his friend, but I don’t know how to fix it. How does one even explain aromanticism to someone else. Am I even aro in the first place like I think I am? Or am I just awkward and weird in relationships? I’m confused and just…please help. If you’ve been in a similar situation, please. I don’t know what to do.
