hi hi!! im a gay man and was wondering what the origin behind he/him lesbians are - i thought id ask you since im not overly experienced in the lesbian community and you seem like the person to ask. id love to learn more so i can understand a little better.

First off, hello to you too and im really glad a non-lesbian is taking time to learn about lesbian history and actually asking a lesbian!

As far as i know it really flucuated with the butch/femme movement that was first documented around 1903

Sadly though because most lesbian and gay culture was underground, we dont really know when it started.

He/him lesbians started as a way for butchs to "pass" as men in a homophobic society and a safe way for femmes to refer to butchs at that time. Now its more popular due to another common lesbian experience.

That experience being lesbians historical disconnect from womanhood, men, femininity and a sort of slap in the face/ditching of the patriarchy. A sort of big " fuck you" to the society that made women an object to men.

Thats about as much as i know and that link is just to show when butchs and he/him lesbians really came about but its to the wiki for butchs and femmes so its great material if you'd like to know more.
