Why does everyone I know go straight to getting drunk or doing drugs when someone goes wrong?

So I continue to distract myself using facebook and tumblr in order to avoid studying for my AP U.S. History test. Such an immensely large mistake, and yet so tempting... I don't know what to do with myself...
