i just remembered some great advice a book accidentally gave me

patricia c. wrede wrote ‘dealing with dragons’, and i loved it when i was a kid--mainly because the princess had long hair like me, but hers was so long it touched the ground. i cut my hair when i was 18 and it’s been too weak to grow out long again

anyway, this princess starts working for a dragon, and of course there are tons of interesting things that happen to her. i re-read the book when i was 22, and two things struck me

she accidentally released a genie from a bottle, and she used her wish to ask for ingredients to a fire-proofing potion (she was working for a dragon at the time, remember)

she saved a magical bird, and it gave her instant transportation feathers. she used these by the end of the book.

‘how could she use her wishes and magical items so easily, almost frivolously?’ i thought, and read to the end, and happily put down and forgot to read the sequel (which is just as good). but today at 24 years old, i realized that Cimorene (the princess), first of all wasn’t wasting her wishes, she was using them when she needed them, and to do otherwise would have been a waste.

not only that, she trusted that more good things would come her way. oh, maybe she’d never get another wish from a genie, but there would be more and more things that would come her way, and she would use them with just as much practicality and ease. 

that’s what i take away from the story. there will be times in my life where i will see an opportunity and not take it, for fear that i’ll misuse it. but the act of not taking it is a misuse. i just have to trust that another one will come, and another--and use them all
