Crossing the Walls, 2025
@ Guimarães, Braga, Portugal
The defensive system of the city of Guimarães consisted of two lines of walls. The older of the two surrounded the upper part of the city, adjacent to the castle, and dates back to the late 12th or early 13th century. It was intended to protect the upper town of Guimarães and to demarcate the defensive zone directly associated with the castle. Later, during the second half of the 13th century, under the reigns of King Afonso III and King Dinis, a second defensive line began to be built to protect the lower town. This clearly demarcated two urban areas. The upper area was more closely associated with military and royal power, due to the presence of the castle. The lower town was under greater influence from the Church and the Town Council, notably because it housed the Collegiate Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. During the reign of King João I, in the 14th century, the section of wall that divided the upper town from the lower town was destroyed, leading to the unification of the two settlements into a single town, Guimarães. The outer wall, encircling the entire main urban area and featuring nine gates providing access, remained in place until the 17th century.
