how did you manage to write professionally for years? I'm trying to have a go at being published, but there are many steps along the way
I should probably start by saying I wasn’t referring to fiction writing, if that’s your jam. I’m talking about my freelance work, so SEO pieces, press releases, guest blog posts, short articles (most of which are uncredited/ghost written), and that sort of thing. But now I’m finally into science writing, which has been my end game all along, so I write reports for aquaculture consultancies and, now, I have a regular job with a science magazine.
As for how I did it, basically I started with the shittest of shit jobs just to build my reputation and experience. In the early days, I was expected to produce around 1000 words of writing, sometimes in less than a day, and I was only being paid around $2 for my troubles. But if you go into it knowing you’re going to be screwed and your work is going to be undervalued, then it’s not so bad. I just thought of it as a stepping stone. The sites I used were hirewriters.com and freelancer.co.uk; just be careful if you’re using them, though.
From there, I saw an advertisement for a kids’ science magazine in China so I wrote a few articles for them which was good experience. Then as people I knew from uni started setting up their own businesses, a lot of them remembered that I was a writer and reconnected asking if I’d be willing to take on report writing work as needed, and a guy from Portugal also got in touch through my LinkedIn to offer a similar arrangement, so I’ve been doing that. I also published my own research from uni which has helped me stand out a bit.
And last year I took on an internship at OneKind as a copywriter/researcher which is where I think all my recent success has come from as it’s made my writing a lot more visible (they have a massive audience and are highly regarded). So, since then, I’ve just added “writer” to the keywords for my job alerts and have been applying to any that interest me and it’s been going pretty well. Seriously, if you go to your favoured job site and just type in “writer” you’d be surprised by the amount of jobs available. You’ll should be able to find something that can get you started.
That’s the short version of how I did it (I know it doesn’t look short but believe me I tried). If you were more looking on how to get into fiction, I have managed to publish a little. I always used the absolutewrite forums to find opportunities as they had a whole board dedicated to that. But now I can’t access the forums because apparently they’re not secure. :/ I know a lot of people start by setting up a writing blog and just keep going with that until they can build up enough attention.
I hope something here was useful. Sorry if not.
