AU Of Convenience

Pre - World War II. Sherlock, still the consulting detective, begins to slowly give into the pressures of society (one Mycroft has forced him to live in for the sake of the family name.) and decides that perhaps it would best for him to marry. The only other woman he can think of is the dubious Irene, clever and rich by her own means. The two marry out of convenience. Both needing a spouse for appearances. As years go by both slowly fall, but it is only when he faces the fear of death when he is drafted and she faces the fear that she could lose her only equal that both realize the marriage is no longer what it started out as. It's only after the war is over that both admit that they have fallen for their spouse.
