JVJ or Enjolras for the ask meme!
This is a difficult question since when I first read the abridged version of Les Mis many years ago, I loved Valjean's story a lot. I still do. I love how he is allowed to be angry at society and violence inherent in the system yet still tries his hardest to do the right thing to his mind. I do get frustrated with the way he keeps things from Cosette about his life but Hugo is also very good at writing him suffering from trauma.
And he finds love and meaning through Cosette and I adore how they become devoted with Valjean taking on the role of both father and mother.
He does have his short comings but also some genuinely funny moments with Valjean hiding wigs in his pockets but also sweet moments with him as a gardener advising about the use of nettles and his moments with Fauchelevant as convent husbands.
But much as I love Valjean, I think my fandom heart belongs with Enjolras. The first time I read the descriptions of the amis and how good Enjolras was and how much he was thinking fondly about his friends made me fall in love with him and his friends and here we are a couple of years down the line, I still cry over these fictional characters who are like my friends.
It also helps that he is endowed with the narrative symbolism in many ways.
He is a priest of the revolution which ties him back to Myriel and to the ideals of love and the place of revolution being hallowed grounds but he's also a Romantic ideal the way he possesses androgynous qualities.
He also reminds me of Fantine with her struggle to keep fighting and be reunited with Cosette whereas Enjolras and the others are fighting for a Republic. I like the singleminded focus he has.
Despite being a character with a lot of symbolism, I love that he argues with a kid who makes fun of him, makes terrible puns, his friends tease him on several occassions and he obviously listens to his friends, preferring to stay quiet unless he is motivated to speak. He is also capable of completing and correcting himself through his friends' influence.
His barricade speech is one of my favourite passages in the book amd he is such a dork with his random segue into 'goats of darkness.'
He also rejects the great man narrative. I love his focus and him working towards the Republic with everyone else and assigning/sharing leadership whenever possible. I would gladly follow him amd fight under him since he proves himself to be a really good strategist and fighter. I have a lot more emotions (I have been listening to barricade day playlists on repeat) and a lot more I can say about Enjolras but this is already long.
