where did you get the inspiration for derecho's name?

A reveal to you all: the names of everything, folklore characters and families alike, are simply obscure fancy words that correlate with the object they’re being used as a title for! “Derecho” in particular is a line of fast-moving windstorms associated with thunderclouds and such. “Brume”, on the other hand is simply a fancy word for “mist”.

As it happens, I’m still present on this blog! Don’t worry - even though I’m not doing much, I’m always here. 

Anyway, I unfortunately don’t have a very satisfying answer. I just made a broad list of things I wanted to talk about, made categories out of them, listed specific things in those categories, and went from there. It’s not nearly as complex as it looks, though it does take a second to get used to setting up if you’re doing it for the first time. Just grouping things together as is appropriate and then working on one post at a time was all I really did!

(ooo that worldbuilding answer was great ty) what are your tips for making unique ranking systems or religions for fics???

Honestly for interesting religions and mythology, just go watch Crash Course world mythology and take notes on what you find interesting! Like, in general just do some research and (respectfully) pilfer ideas from real life, but that’s a great video series and you’ll have a good time.

For ranking systems, it’s kind of the same deal. I usually stick to a similar structure because I like to get radical with a lot of other aspects of my fanclans, but you can certainly play with it. The bare minimum is some kind of leader, someone who succeeds the leader (or a clear plan for picking a new one), and some sort of separation between adults, younger cats, and elders. The rest is really just for flavor - I do like me a medicine cat/seer/healer but they aren’t strictly necessary. 

So an easy way to play with this is to just take the existing ranks and make them more specialized, like WindClan’s tunnelers and moor runners. But unless you’re making really massive clans, you can only do this to a point.

A thing that I see crop up from time to time is a Leader/Heir/Regent system, playing off of royalty. In this case, the heir is the leader-to-be, and they are destined for this role from their birth. The regent is the “deputy” of sorts, the second in command, and may become de-facto leader if the leader dies while the heir is not yet an adult. The obvious trouble with this is that cats usually have multiple kittens and it seems like a dick move to pick between littermates, but it is a fun deviation from the norm.

Ok, let’s grab from some other inspiration. How about a council of elders/kitty parliament? This is difficult unless you have a larger clan, but if the numbers are kept small I think it could work. And if the numbers are kept small each cat of the council could also have a distinct role which would be fun!

You could also look into social structures of other animals? I’m not particularly knowledgable in that department but it’s something to consider.

Finally, as you develop your clans you might find gaps where like...this could be a rank, it just would need to be official. I’m talking about your historians, your midwives, etc. These are probably one-cat ranks, but even if you make them unofficial they’re good flavor and represent what your clan values! They also let you show differences between clans if you wanna keep the foundation similar.
