She wanted something else, something different, something more. Passion and romance, perhaps, or maybe quiet conversations in candlelit rooms, or perhaps something as simple as not being second

CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, artemis does not completely hulk out at everyone she meets, not is she some kind of moody, selfish crazy person. if you just LOOK at her meeting BETTE in homefront, i mean, it was a little awkward, but she wasn’t rude or unkind to her. if anything, artemis just felt uncomfortable being around a bunch of people whom she thought she had nothing in common with, which, going into gotham academy after gotham north, kind of makes some sense. she’s only angry or rude when the other person is angry or rude to her on first meeting, like wally and roy. like please lets give up on this idea that artemis is completely unfriendly and unapproachable.
THAT BEING SAID, artemis definitely does find it hard to connect to a lot of the people that she meets. she RARELY ever lets people in, and prefers to just keep them at a friendly and comfortable distance, because, quite honestly, a lot of people wouldn’t understand the darker parts of her. she’s been messed with and mentally abused for most of her life, and people are always so quick to dismiss that. her dad literally used to pit her against her sister in fights, and sometimes liked to drop her in situations where she knew nothing and had to kill someone as a T E S T. it’s really not that unreasonable that she likes to keep people at arm’s length after that, because, naturally, she doubts that anyone would understand, and also doesn’t think she wants them to.
THIS IS WHY I feel her strongest relationships come from people who she is more similar to, who also share that darker side of them. it’s one of the reasons i see her getting along so well with the batkids, they share a GOTHAM darkness, a more shadow-y history that you don’t always get with other stories. artemis truly connects with people who she doesn’t have to TALK to to express herself. the people who can move in sync with her, and understand how each other feels without pressing or pushing. especially considering how pressing and pushing artemis is tantamount to a death wish.
BASICALLY, with friends, artemis is NOT opposites attract. ( and fight me if you say spitfire, because those two are NOT opposites ). artemis needs a mutual understanding in all of her relationships, an unspoken one, because she’s NOT GOING TO TALK. at least for the most part. so the people who she’s really friends with are the people who don’t need her to.
