Nope, nope, no, no, no. This guy's a creep.
Night's still young, but Samto has noticed his partying spirit is already starting to go belly-up. That's not good, means he's starting to stiffen up… Need to keep going, need to keep his eyes ahead and his thoughts away from the past.
Damn it all; why do the Knights have to be here, so far from Garreg Mach?
"Oh! Uh, hey, waaait—!"
He looks a mess, uniform barely clinging onto his torso as he runs towards a much nicer looking guy, who he thinks is with the... Oh. Well.
"Y'look like a guy who knows how to have fun." He says with a faintly too wide grin, clutching a rough-hewn die in his hand. "You're up for some? I'll give ya' one of—" He gives the bracelet a quick shake, and the charms rattle. "These if you win, if you want!"
Joshua and Tana have danced each other dizzy, and agreed to part for a time to mingle with the crowd. Not too long after Joshua finds himself alone, there's a rather handsome, if harried, stranger running directly toward him.
He's like a sore thumb on the ballroom floor, panting and calling out, but he's rather magnetizing. And the lines he's using, well...they're right out of Joshua's playbook.
Joshua eyes the die in the stranger's hand like it's something he's been fixing for, the vice he can never shake. The charms rattling on his bracelet hold little interest for Joshua - he's already got enough seashells - and yet he can't turn down an offer like this.
"Are you looking for a bet, lad?" Joshua nearly tips his hat, before he remembers...he's not wearing it. He flashes a grin instead, pulling on his braid. "What are you looking to offer?" He reaches out, prepared for anything - will the man pull him into a dance?
"Because I'll warn you - if you get me betting, you might not get me to stop."
"Hello again, beautiful!"
Out of everyone he could've seen at this party, Fiora is someone he wasn't expecting at all. But he does suppose the Knights have to keep things secure, so they just have to work the whole night... In a place like this, too!
"Lookin' good, as always! But the Knights must be running you ragged, with how you're probably gonna working all night... Can't say I envy you, seriously."
He takes a swig of the drink in his hand, really setting in the impression that he's given up maintaining the image of any sort of authority, and pries off one of the seashells dangling from his wrist to hand out to her with a grin.
"Ah, well... Take this as a little memento from me. And, hey, if you ever need a little break from all the noise out here... You know how to pick my handsome face out of a crowd, I'd hope?"
There’s that voice again. She should have expected to see him here. Her smile is somewhat fond as Samto comes to join her, just for a moment, drink held in his hand and lips loose with praise, but she knows him well enough to know they’d be this way even so. She listens to him flaunt and fawn and watches him, seeing mostly him, and only a ghost of a memory.
Ah... those thoughts are so prevalent tonight. What’s gotten into her?
“Thank you, Samto.” She takes his seashell carefully, as though it might shatter between her fingers, and offers him one of her anchors. “I hope you’ll keep the heart-breaking to a minimum, out of respect for me and the other knights that oft have to clean up such messes.”

He is a liar, an actor — a man that hides his true self behind a mask. It's so obvious that a conversation with him veers on insulting. But... isn't that what they all are? Isn't that what all people are? Masks of themselves, of other people — pretenders, liars? In that way, then, he is startlingly honest, by being so fake, and so obviously (at least, to her) so. She wonders what he really is, behind his act... and hates how much his carefree and flirtatious attitude reminds her of Lyra.

"I haven’t had the opportunity to meet Samuel in person yet, but I’ve heard he’s a skilled fighter—and a fellow professor, no less" her tone was severe but secure, she genuinely wanted to know him better.
"I’d be interested in crossing blades with him sometime, purely for training. If the rumors are true, he might just be the kind of opponent I’ve been looking for" and she smirked, hoping that he would accept her challenge, sooner or later.
As one familiar face passes from Samuel's sight, another comes right back into it.
This is someone he can recognize with no trouble: Katarina, that sweet-looking girl who always seemed so very sad. It isn't like they were friends or even really knew each other, but certainly it can't be wrong to check in on an old ally... Can it?
"Hey there," He purrs, greeting her with a soft smile and a slight wave of his hand. "Didn't think I'd ever see you again. What brings you all the way out here, huh?"
"Oh, Samuel..." He does stop her in her tracks, his name spoken before the realization of his presence sets in; by the time it has, she is already waving back, the gesture similarly slight and the corners of her eyes touched by the same sort of softness.
Perhaps it is because he is an old ally; perhaps it is because he greets her warmly when she would not expect it; perhaps it is because she imagines he knows something of the weight of suspicion, though hers is infinitely more deserved. Whatever the reason, Katarina loosens her grip on her worries and apprehensions.
"...I didn't think I'd see you again either," comes the soft-spoken answer. "But... it isn't bad. Welcome to Garreg Mach, Samuel."
For a moment, she dares to let her smile grow, though she soon tucks it away again.
"I came here... to study. To... learn. From other people." It's a partial truth, at least, and one she has been glad for. To think that a devil like her had learned some modicum of faith -- but that's a topic for another time.
"...And you?" A pause; when she starts again, it is slow, hesitant. "If... if you need anything, um... I would be happy to help." As if flustered by her own offer, she quickly adds: "Garreg Mach is-- pretty big, isn't it?"
As it turns out, there are plenty of familiar faces to be found here at Garreg Mach, and one of them is another sweet-faced girl he knows — Or at least knows of.
This one is a princess of Macedon, to his knowledge, which means Samto is at least slightly more inclined to behave himself around her than not, especially considering her age. It's always nice to say hello, he'd think, but he does secretly wish she leaves it at that... He's not exactly the sort of person kids should be hanging around.
"Fancy seeing you here, miss!" He gives her a smile so wide — And even somewhat genuine — That it makes the skin under his eyes crease. "I know we didn't see much of each other durin' the war, but I'd figure you still recognize me, don't you?"
It's fine if she doesn't, truthfully. He doesn't expect her to, really, but it won't be a problem unless she calls him Navarre. Then he might get a little mad.
"What brings you all the way from dear ol' Macedon, hm?"
It's obvious from his greeting that this man knows her, but Maria -- for all her great love of people -- does struggle to place him for a moment. 'Oh!', she announces her thoughts, fingers coming up to dot her chin as she cants her head one way and then the other. He looks like Navarre, but his hair is lighter and his eyes aren't sharp enough, softened rather than steeled, and Mister Navarre surely wouldn't sound so upbeat.
But Navarre is clue enough to get there, and all at once, the little cleric's eyes light up.
"Mister Samto? Is that you?" She grins as she asks, hearted to see another from far-flung Archanea despite their little time together. "You were with Prince Marth when he and his army came to rescue us, right? And I saw you after!" (How unfortunate, the number of people she missed meeting because of that; how unfortunate, the danger she put them through.)
"Hee hee... it's nice to officially meet you!" He knows her as a princess, and so by gesture at least, she greets him as one; her curtsy is as faultless as her speech royally isn't, and when she rises, her hand curls over her heart, fingers buried in her tunic and rosy eyes shining. "I'm here to learn and get stronger! Then I'll be able to help my sister and--" A brief pause there, for a brother the world reviles. "--Prince Marth, too!"
Smiling, she continues: "What about you, Mister Samto? Are you a professor? A knight?" She giggles at that, always joy, never contempt. "Maybe we'll even be in the same house? Oh, I hope so!"
Bartholomew was feeling rather proud of himself- the ad had only been in the papers for a few weeks and he already had an applicant. Sounded like a healthy lad over the phone, which was good. A sickly worker would be of less use than a healthy one, and quite frankly, what he needed was someone healthy. Not that he was sickly, perish the thought, but he was getting older, and his back had been twinging as of late. Better to act now and get some help around the place then wait for some unfortunate and costly disaster.
It occurred to him that he wasn’t certain how far away his potential employee might be- could be an hour or more, could be less, it hadn’t occurred to him to set a time for the meeting. Too late now, he supposed.
