treasure planet comic you say? 👀 🪐
I DID say Treasure Planet comic 👀
Story time: when I was about 9 and home life had Hit The Fucking Shit Fan, there was a month where I'd watch a then-newly-released Treasure Planet every day. EVERY. Day. For a month. (Incidentally, nobody had figured out the neurodivergence yet.)
So for the unfamiliar: Disney's Treasure Planet is a space retelling of Treasure Island, with the blatant racism and sexism of the book sanded off but the morally grey character of Long John Silver very much intact.
I've always thought it funny that Jim Hawkins, at the end of the movie, choses to join the space navy - when his most formative social connection during the movie is with a pirate who is very much still actively sought after by the navy.
Which led to the basic premise: it's years post-movie, Jim (now an adult in his mid-20's) has graduated as a naval officer. John Silver has finally lost his cat-and-mouse with the law, but will be given a trial; he calls in Jim as a witness to his character. It'll be the first time they see each other since Jim was 14.
Why do it as a comic instead of a fic? Especially when I'm not a cartoon artist by origin? (see above: trying to nail down Silver's design)
Simple: 1) narrative art is one of my big loves purely from the 'what are the techniques and skills needed to do it'-angle; 2) writing dialogue comes much easier to me than writing descriptions; 2) the source material is impressive visual art. I felt and still feel that the visual style and visual language of the movie do a lot of the heavy lifting, and I wanted to stick to that register.
The script is 90% finished, so this one will get done... sometime. I'll need to stop mooning over bucktommy first, though ;)
