Instrumental Case Turkish

Linguists don’t agree whether the instrumental should be considered a proper case or not, but for now I’m going to treat it like one.

The instrumental denotes the meaning “with” or “by means of”

It is formed by adding the suffix -(y)la

Kadınla - with the woman

Kediyle - with the cat

I wish there were a distinction in english genitives between personal significance to something and simple association.

When a major corporation says 'our community, our values, etc' to associaties, it feels disingenuous. Too personal. When a person has to say 'my ex', 'my former friend' the word 'my' feels too personal still, and while a person may miss or care abt their ex or former friend, feels like there should be an option to express in that genitive that theres less a connection than before to those ppl. Even having to say 'my abuser' 'my rapist' for ppl whove been abused and violated seems so unfair for victims.

Is there a language you know of that has a genitive case or employs some other morphosyntactic complexity to sentences to indicate associations that distinguishes between personal significance and simple association?

The grammatical cases 'instrumental' and 'comitative' can both be translated into the English preposition "with", however they differ with what context the words are present in. Comitative case defines accompaniment. It is equivalent to the phrases "accompanied by" and "in the company of". Example sentences include: "Who are you sitting with?" "I am eating rice with fish." Instrumental case defines instrument, namely the noun that was used to complete the action. Its equals include "through", "by"and "using". Examples include: "I write with both pens and pencils." "I arrived at the office with the bus." Russian is one language which distinguishes these two cases. Russian has only a case suffix for the instrumental, however to mark the comitative, the preposition ‘s’ “with” is used before the modified noun. - s mnoy - “with me” - s tobóy - “with you” A noun without the preposition is in instrumental. Ya pishú étim pierom. - “I write using this pen.” Yakut/ Saxa is a Siberian Turkic language which also presents both these cases. Cases are suffixed onto nouns. The suffix for the instrumental is "-(I)nAn" and for the comitative "-LIIn". Now for example nouns in Yakut: "eye" (peace) and "uot" (fire) Instrumental- eyenen; uotunan Comitative- eyeliin; uottuun The pronouns for I and you are in yakut "min" and "en". Instrumental- miiginen; eyiginen Comitative- miiginniin; eyiginniin
