"I... am?"

She pauses once she hears his words, processing for a moment. Of course, the fake dating was a thing they’d been doing for a while, and she’d kind of started it without his permission, but she’d asked for it after! And he seemed to be having fun with it! So she figured that things were okay. But she could tell by the way that he was talking that she’d messed up.

"I really didn’t mean for it to be like that. I mean, it’s not like you like me, so I figured that it would be fine. Uhm, but if you wanna stop, you could like, fake dump me. Or I could come up with a story about it, or something like that."

Her cheeks are bright red with embarrassment, and she can’t stop herself from talking. This was a normal habit for her, and she felt bad. She had no idea what to do.

“I’m sure of it!”

Nova has thought a lot about aliens in the past few months. At one point, they’d seemed so impossible, but so had plenty of other things. She’d laughed at the idea of ghosts, and now they were a very real thing that she couldn’t avoid. So aliens? Well, they just had to exist. There was no reason that they shouldn’t.

“I’m going to be the one to find them.” She doesn’t really believe that, but it’d be nice. “I think it’d be cool to befriend them.”

“So you interact with spirits, right?”

There’s excitement in Nova’s tone, a grin on her lips. Maybe she was a little more excited about this than she should be, but she had been hoping to learn more about the different interactions people could have with ghosts, and now she was talking to an actual spirit medium! She could barely contain herself.

“Do you see them?” She only has a really vague idea of what a medium actually is.

“Did you see that?”

Nova was still getting used to seeing ghosts, but she was starting to get a handle on things. It was an adjustment phase, but it was something. Now though, her attention was entirely on Annette, because there was something off here. The way that she had looked at that ghost was the same way Nova had, not the way that someone who couldn’t see them would have looked down the hall.

“You did, didn’t you!”

For the past few months, it felt like Nova’s life had become one mistake right after the next. It almost felt like she was cursed, and considering her being alive was an accident, it was very likely that she was. She had a broken wrist, she’d managed to get herself kicked off of the cheerleading team, her friends weren’t talking to her, and those that were, were dead. 

She was just trying to get through her day at school, trying to grab some books from her locker, when someone comes over. She recognizes Danny, but isn’t entirely sure why he’s coming to talk to her. Still, she closes her locker so that she can actually talk to him. Well, she tries. The first time, her hand goes through it (something that happens a little more often than she would like), so she tries again with her elbow, which works.

“Hey uh, what’s up?” An awkward little grin, or an attempt. She’s not having the best day.

Nova really hates crying, despite how often she does it. She’d gone to hide in the bathroom, maybe not the smartest idea in the world, but she didn’t know where else to go. Hearing the bathroom door open made her heart stop for a second, until she sees Heather M. walking in. It wasn’t the best thing in the world, but she was certainly glad that it was her, over someone else.

There’s an attempt made to make it look a little less terrible, but Nova was obviously very worked up. Sometimes it was hard to be here with everyone, to know what they were all saying about her, and it was made even worse when she had to interact with Alex. Today was one of the worst of those days.

“You’re too nice to me.” Because she’s been avoiding Heather slightly, lately. Not because Heather had done anything, but because her life had become so weird, and so terrible, that she hadn’t wanted her to get wrapped up in all of it. “I’ll be okay. I promise.”

She’s never been happier for the lack of light. Nova had been hoping that her nerves would go unnoticed, especially the closer that the other got, but now, with Kristina’s head near her heart, of course she could hear it. Nova was afraid it might just manage to beat its way out of her chest. That would certainly suck.

“Oh uh, it does that sometimes. I mean uh, trust me, I’d tell it to shut up if I could.” There’s an awkward little laugh, but she does really hope her heart will shut up. She doesn’t want the other to move.

Nova is actually listening quite intently to the answer. She has plenty of questions about ghosts, and finding actual resources that could give her real answers, and well, she did mention Minecraft for a second there, but this is closer than Nova has actually gotten to much of anything. So it’s good. And then she’s entirely caught off guard.

“Me?” It’s not as if the other is wrong or anything like that, but she’s never been called out so suddenly before. She even points to herself. “Ghost? Why do you say uh, the ghost thing?” Once again, she’s aware the other isn’t wrong, she’s mostly curious as to how she knew.
