The player's niece, Sophia and her favorite mascot!

“Did you know-” Nova began taking a seat next to the Jester, “You’re my niece’s favorite mascot?”
Bittergiggle, who was currently more bitter than giggle, slowly shifted his gaze towards the other, “Wh-what?”
“My niece, you know, the kid I’m looking for?”
“I… I know that,” he stated, “but, what do you mean by ‘favorite’?”
Nova simply shrugged in response, “Because she just… does.”
The Jester scoffed indignantly and sneered, “I don’t believe you. Why in the WORLD would anyone like me?” His head sank once again. “What’s so special about me…?”
Thoughtfully, the human bit at their lip, “How about I just show you instead.” Nova rummaged around in their messenger bag. Bittergiggle watched curiously as they pulled out a photo and handed it to The Jester. “This is my niece, Sophia.”
Gingerly, he took the photo into his hand, abnormally large eyes then flickered over the picture. He suddenly sucked in an epiphanic breath, “She… is multicolored?”
“Vitiligo,” Nova corrected, “it’s an autoimmune disorder that causes patches of skin to lose their pigmentation.”
That was one too many words for the Jester to decipher, so he decided to brushaside for later. “I didn’t know humans could be so… colorful.” Bittergiggle murmured contemplatively, eyes still glued to the photo.
Nova simply nodded and smiled, watching the other’s reaction closely, “That’s why she likes you. Because you and her have something in common-”
“We’re both bi-colored…” He finally surmised, face lighting up. “A-and I’m really her favorite?”
Again, Nova nodded in affirmation. The left-side of Bittergiggle’s face stretched into a wide grin.
“I’m… her favorite.” He echoed. He had never been someone’s favorite before, usually he was just yelled at or thrown to the side, labelled a ‘Nuisance’ and ‘A troublemaker’, he was told parents wouldn’t want a mascot like him.
“Maybe you can meet her, when we find her. I’m sure she would love to see you too.” Nova offered with a small smile.
Bittergiggle cocked his head to one side, thinking momentarily, before smiling with eyes closed, “Thank you, Nova. I… I would like that,” he handed the photo back over to his human companion, “I would like that a lot.”

You were sitting in the Gryffindor common room next to a very playful and attention needing James Potter. Your focus was not on him though, which upset him slightly as he leaned over to lay his head on your shoulder, groaning as he saw how many more pages you had to go in your schoolwork. “Y/n.. take a breaaak!” he whined at you slightly. “James, you have been around me all day, and you have had my attention.” You couldn’t help but giggle at the slight frown he was wearing as you turned to look at him. “I have had to do this for three days now, puppy.” You stated as you held his hand. He had been following you all day, which was a rare sight, seeing how he was normally with his three friends, Sirius, Remus, and Peter. “Why aren’t you with your friends?” You asked, just now noticing how weird it was that he wasn’t causing a ruckus with them. “Uh- they’re just busy.” He stated as his signature sweet grin hit his face, which caused your heart to melt. “Alright.. I have to go to the library though to find a book about Mandrakes..” You said softly.
“Okay! I’ll come with you Y/n!” He exclaimed excitedly, smiling as you playfully groaned. “Fiiine.” It was now your turn to whine as you got up and walked out of the common room with a smiling, bouncy James, who was happy to be getting more attention from you. “Hey, are you coming tomorrow to my quidditch game?” he asked you, hoping you would say yes. “Of course Jamesie, why wouldn’t I?” You asked back as you walked to the library, going down a couple of staircases to get to your destination, going inside as you see a couple of students studying, taking in the dark, quiet place as you went to go find your book. “I dunno, just thought I would ask you before I assumed.” He said, looking at the books, looking at you from time to time, thinking you wouldn’t notice, he kept following you, as per usual the past couple of days.
“Hey, what’s the real reason you have been wanting to hang out more recently?” You asked him out of the blue. “I know for sure that Sirius isn’t busy, Remus I could believe would be busy. But the excuse that all three are busy isn’t something I believe..” You said to him, smiling a bit, you had a crush on him, and you two had been very good friends since your 4th year, so you were hoping he liked you back for a little while, but were too scared of rejection that you never asked. “Well..” he started as he had his eyes on one book before rubbing the back of his head, keeping his eyes on the book before he looked back up at you and smiled softly. “I… like you.. as in more than a friend Y/n..”
You looked at him like he had a second head as you started smiling, “This isn’t a joke, right? Is Sirius around here somewhere? One of your little pranks?” You said, expecting it to be, how could this be real? It couldn’t, right? James slightly frowned, but soon smiled sweetly. “I am both slightly offended and amused at your comment, of course this isn’t a prank, love!” He laughed, as though you said the funniest joke in the world. “I love you.” He said softly to you as he wrapped his arms around you, his sudden words had you flustered as you smiled softly, looking up at him as you decided to close the space and give him the first kiss you two shared, smelling his cologne and tasting the lollipop he had been sucking on earlier, smiling, you cut it short to say your peace.

“I’m gonna go look for her.”
Slowly, Nova’s brother turned to look at them, eyes squinting wearily. His voice croaked, “What?” He knew he had just suffered through a concussion, heart still pounding in his ears, but did he hear them correctly? “What did you say?” he repeated.
Nova swallowed, “I’m going to go look for Sophia.”
The only sound that followed was the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor, ambiently filling the hospital room.
So he wasn’t hearing things then. He sighs, “No. No, you’re not. That’s stupid.”
“Why not?!”
If Adam had the energy, he’d roll his eyes, instead he takes a calming breath, “Because it’s dangerous.” Gesturing with his hand, he then alluded to himself, “Do you want to end up like me, with a concussion and broken ribs? I’m not exactly having fun here.”
“But Sophia is still trapped in there! You heard what they said, they have reason to believe that the children are STILL alive-”
“You think I don’t know that?” He suddenly snapped, “You think I don’t want to find my daughter too?! If I wasn’t hooked up to all this crap, I’d be out there looking for her too! They told me I was lucky to have survived the collapse at all.” A waning pause filled the room and Adam breathed shakily, “Look, you don’t need to play hero. That’s the cops’ jobs.”
“They aren’t doing anything though!” Nova argued, “They already said they’re putting the investigation on hold because of some government shit or whatever; So, as always they’re being COMPLETELY useless.”
“Listen to me.” Adam hissed, before lowering his voice to a near whisper, “There’s something… going on in that building. It’s… not what it seems.”
This piqued the younger sibling’s interest. Nova leaned in, copying the other’s secretive demeanor, “Like what?”
Adam paused for a moment. Should he actually tell them or not? After all, he had no concrete evidence, just hearsay and rumors that had circulated between the other teachers during their downtime. Well, it’s not like he was going back to work there, they couldn’t fire him, right? Plus, if he couldn’t stop Nova going, then he could at least try to warn them.
“There’s a lot more to the daycare than it seems. You know those mascots they have out sometimes?”
“Vaguely. I’ve really only seen that tiny… blue… thing. Captain Diddle or something?”
“Fiddles.” Adam corrected, before waving it away, “That’s not important. Anyway, those mascots the handlers let play with the kids… I don’t think they’re animatronics like they told us. They seem too sentient.”
Nova was taken aback, “What, like people in costumes?”
“No, no, something else. I think– and stay with me on this– I think they’re alive.”
They paused and blinked, “Alive?!” they repeated dryly, “Adam, I think that concussion did more to your head than the doctor thinks. Maybe you need an MRI-”
“I’m serious!” He hissed, then rubbed at his face with his free hand, “Okay listen. In the back office, past the play area, underneath the computer desk, there’s a red button.” he murmured, “It reveals an elevator of sorts that goes down and I mean DEEP down. I found it by accident while looking for supplies.”
Nova cocked their head, obviously puzzled, by their brother’s (possibly insane) ramblings, “But, I thought the building was only one story?”
“Exactly.”
“Sooo, Is it a basement or…?”
“I don’t think so, I couldn’t get a good enough look though,” Adam said, “One of the mascot handlers stopped me before I could investigate. He told me the office was off limits to teachers and daycare workers,” Thoughtfully, he paused, “I think they know more than they let on.”
Suddenly, just as Nova was going to continue their line of curious questioning, a nurse walked in immediately silencing the two siblings.
“Alright, Mr. Miller,” The nurse began, walking over to Adam’s bedside, “You need to rest, and you-” he looked over at Nova sternly, “Need to leave, so your brother can do just that.”
Nova frowned, but begrudgingly complied and rose from their seat, before flashing their eyes back towards their brother.
“We’ll talk more later, okay? Just please… be careful.” Adam pleaded.
The two then said their hasty farewells while the irritable nurse watched them both closely and impatiently. As the door closed behind Nova, their mind began to race with the interesting conversation they just had. Mindlessly, they began walking down the hall and towards the exit, plotting silently in their head. One way or another, they were going to find their niece and rescue her at all costs, and no human or “mascot” was going to stop them.
Once outside the hospital building, they stopped and craned their head upwards, where Adam rested and recovered in his room. Nova took a small breath, sighing softly through their lips, “Forgive me, Adam,” they muttered to themself, “I promise I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
