                   BETTER  OFF  THIS  WAY  ,  better  off  running  ,  running  far  ,  not  once  turning  head  ‘ver  shoulder  ,  catching  glimpse  of  fingers  stretching  out  to  grab  ,  to  catch  &  devour  whole  ——  that  was  a  different  life  .  that  is  not  now  .  (  *  NOT  NOW  ?  SHE  BEGS  TO  DIFFER  .  )  had  sought  for  a  different  route  ,  somewhere  else  to  go  ,  somewhere  secure  :  found  it  !  almost  there  .  could  nearly  touch  it  ‘gainst  the  pale  light  ,  but  it  fades  too  fast  !  now  out  of  reach  .

 like  the  vision  ‘fore  ,  this  too  will  leave  her  rattled  .

                    wakes  with  a  gasp  ,  eyes  like  saucers  flickering  ‘bout  the  room  --  still  the  same  .  had  not  changed  .  realization  hits  hard  (  just  a  dream  )  ,  pulls  sigh  from  back  of  throat  ,  causes  fragile  heart  to  break  ,  break  ,  break  !  lost  in  self  -  made  darkness  ,  she  rolls  ‘ver  ,  back  turned  to  forgotten  body  ‘side  her  --  too  shaken  to  care  ,  too  upset  to  notice  .

it’s well passed MIDNIGHT. the surrounding neighbourhood has long since been lulled to sleep, save for the boy tapping on lisa’s window— and if he’s lucky, lisa herself.

             “ let me in! ”

on days when lisa can’t leave the house, bernard comes to her. climbs the tree at the side of the house, jumps to the roof, and hangs off her windowsill. a regular PRINCE CHARMING, bringing her sweets and bad jokes and a goofy, red-lipped grin.

                                  they’ve gotten good at this. he offers her another caramel cube, arms                                 hooked over the edge of the window. 

                                                                          ‘ nevermind. I have to go. sorry. ’

        “ what? ” his expression falls as she reaches to shut the window,         quickly shifting to one of panic— footsteps.

                                                                          ‘ berny. leave. ’

it’s not like he can argue. a solemn nod, and bernard disappears to the roof of the house. 

                                      he tries to ignore what he hears from the room below, and fills                                       his head with thoughts of revenge against the man who would                                       dare to hurt her instead.
