That was Nick’s voice, but Jack could still smell Fontaine’s smoke and expensive liquor. He wished the lights were on. He wanted to see his partner and banish these lingering traces of the man he had killed.

“I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.” He stumbled to the light switch and blinked against the sudden brightness. Nick was on the ground. He was bleeding.

Even now, Fontaine was manipulating him, making him hurt someone he cared about. Jack dug his palms into his eye sockets and his breathing became far more erratic. He hated him, he hated him so much.

“I’m sorry. I d-idn’t mean it.” Not that it mattered. Nick was still hurt. Jack moved slowly toward his partner and knelt next to him, but didn’t reach out to wipe away the blood on his partner’s lips. His hands were shaking and he was scared he’d hurt Nick again.

How had he let himself get so caught up in a dream? It had felt so real, but he should have known that it wasn’t. He should have kept himself under control.
