Exploring Connections

During workshop five, we began exploring the relationships between famous figures from the Gallery’s Collection (sitters), ourselves and our location, Southwark and Lambeth. The students are linked to the sitters through their location – many of the places familiar to them will also be familiar to the people that have selected from the Gallery collection!

Using collage, the students each combined photographs of their local area, portraits of themselves from our earlier workshops, and Gallery images of their sitter. There was an amazing variety in the responses produced! 

Sixth form students Yunique and Tatenda were on hand to help with documentation, talking with the Year 10 students to find out about their artwork and responses to the area in which they live.

Straight back into things after the New Year and we were at the Gallery again on the 6 January to introduce the students to the sitters and some of the themes we will be exploring.

In an incredibly privileged glimpse behind-the-scenes in the boardroom, curators Helen Trompeteler and Rab MacGibbon introduced us to some of the incredible original prints that will form part of the final selection.

After lunch, we started looking in more depth at the notion of identity and ways of creatively exploring the idea of changing or hybrid identities. Working with photomontage techniques and using the portraits that I had made with them before the holidays, the students cut and pasted their own image with those of their friends, the local area and images of sitters that they found inspirational.

After an initial reluctance to cut up the photographs at all (they wanted to keep them), they created some fantastic photomontage self-portraits and really started to grasp how identity can be invented.

Welcome to Camden

In 2015, Creative Connections has moved north to the London Borough of Camden, home to Haverstock School and an area well known for its thriving alternative scene.

Camden lock and market have become something of a Mecca for tourists and those wishing to glimpse the more ‘authentic’ side of our city, but Camden is made up of much more than this, incorporating eighteen electoral wards including Covent Garden, Holborn, Hampstead, Kilburn and Highgate.

The borough has played host to a long list of notable characters throughout its history, from singer Amy Winehouse, to literary legend Virginia Woolf and many more.

Our resident DJ Edward Otchere creates a carefully crafted themed soundscape for the National Portrait Gallery's Late Shift events, making the Main Hall resonate. Otchere plays a strictly vinyl set. He’s passionate about sourcing records from all over the world, to find the best examples of the rich sonic qualities of analogue recordings. He has been skillfully distilling 20th century musical masterpieces since his first residency at the BBC’s Bush House Club in the early noughties to his more recent performances at Brunswick House Cafe.
