Hello Hypatia! I'm an aspiring character modeler and I have this terrible, terrible mental block when it comes to texturing characters. I have no problem texturing environment or prop pieces, but for whatever reason I can never make character textures look as good as my other textures. I was wondering if you have any advice or tips for me. Thank you!
Hello nu4! i mean without actually seeing your work i can’t give you specific advice (so feel free to link me some if you want critique)
but when i’m having problems with my art turning out bad and not reaching my usual standard i just remind myself that that’s ok; that doing bad art is better than doing no art.
it can be very easy to look at an untextured model and feel as if the finished thing is years away.. and thats why it’s better to think of art in steps instead of looking past that towards the end result.
'first i do something rubbish, and then i clean that up and have something less rubbish and then i clean that up and-' iteration is the key
so first, lay down some simple colours. doesn’t have to be fancy, literally just flat colours, load it up, see how it looks!
… it looks terrible? awesome. we’re on track!
then throw on some big ol’ messy shadows
still looking terrible? thats cool, it’s all part of the plan
try throwing on some highlights maybe?
loading it up.. still terrible? thats fine!
maybe try adding some details? maybe try cleaning up the shadows? maybe tweak the colour? whatever, doesn’t matter; just keep building and building on that base you’ve created because you’re already past the biggest hurdle of art.
and if still looks terrible to you?
we aim to be terrible because being terrible is the first step to being good.
and well, if being terrible is all part of the plan then it’s a lot easier to continue forging ahead through it all.
dont ever feel like you cant use references either! with character models, sometimes i overlay actual photographs on characters to get an idea of how something should look… and then i paint over it.
sometimes i find photos from certain angles and paint the lighting onto characters. it only ever looks good from one angle but you can build on that and bring the rest of the model in check
i often look at other peoples models and textures, i study them to figure out what i like, sometimes i straight up copy them to help me learn about how they were created.
references are wonderful, wonderful things and will make your art 10x better and 10x easier
