Gene has literally no idea what to do with someone being affectionate towards him. He just stares at Nubsib like he's speaking in tongues and then decides to not think about it, thank you very much.

I relate to Gene on SO MANY levels.

Nubsib says 'Drive safely' and you can just see the little gears in Gene's brain screech to a halt.

The tenderness that Nubsib shows as he soothes Gene through a nightmare is just astonishing. And the way Gene, in his sleep, leans into that touch is heartbreaking.

Gene is so touch-starved, so desperately in need of support and affection and so deeply in denial of that need. He doesn't want to need those things, doesn't even know how to handle it.

But when he's asleep?

He can't stop himself.

Gene needs someone in his life to be beside him. Even if that someone is slightly stalker-y and a bit creepy, tbh.
