Reposted from @dominantpanda - A little late to the game for an early review but I'm here to tell ya'll to check out Nuclear Power, a new comic being released by @fanbasepress ! I had a chance to read the first issue thanks to FP and really am blown away by just how timely it's release is with just EVERYTHING that's been going on for over the past 12 months. It takes place in an alternate history where nuclear war does break out from the Cuban Missile Crisis, and 60 years later America is now 13 states left over from nuclear fallout, run by the authoritarian Joint Chiefs of Staff. I know I'm repeating others by saying it but Nuclear Power's story is really going to resonate with readers right now, tackling themes of authoritarianism, xenophobia, and sexism. There's a scene in the first issue with the protagonist Major Tocci being constantly shot down and disrespected by her male higher ups, and the authors @desire_yay and Erica Harrell do such a good job in the dialogue of showing Tocci trying to stand up for herself while still having to toe that line of "respect" for the men who clearly haven't earned it. Their final dismissal of her being "too emotional" had me bristling for Tocci and myself. Combine all of that with the great art by @protokitty , which just shines throughout the comic from the quieter emotional scenes to dynamic and high energy action panels. The limited color palette, made up of reds and blacks, give it a retro feel that fits the tone and style very well. Like I said, I missed the early review window, but that means you can get your copy right now! You can find it on Hooplah or ComiXology for just $0.99.
