Akira Yamaoka - Null Moon
Staying on Theme | Beneath the Null Moon
The seventh video of Staying on Theme, my series on analyzing music in storytelling (and storytelling in music), is LIVE! In this video, we're introduced to Maria via the dark-yet-funky vibes of "Beneath the Null Moon," another piece re-recorded for the Silent Hill 2 remake (and the namesake for @cleolinda 's SH2 sideblog, @beneath-the-null-moon ). I dig into the differences between the Dorian mode and the natural minor and how it helps disguise a musical Easter egg hidden in plain sight throughout the soundtrack.
These videos are clipped from my full spoiler/music commentary playthrough of the Silent Hill 2 remake, which you can watch on YouTube HERE. Tune into the stream on Twitch every other Wednesday at 7PM Eastern, and expect a new episode of Staying on Theme every Monday!
Last stream was the finale, but there's still more music to talk about! NEXT WEDNESDAY, 10/1, I'll be hopping on twitch.tv/idoherty451 at 7PM Eastern to talk about each of the endings I haven't streamed yet and jam out to the rock songs that play over the credits. Come hang with us, and let me know if you have any questions about the game, the music--whatever comes to mind!
Dear listener, it’s become a bit of a tradition on my blog that when another Halloween rolls around, I’ll post yet another dark ambient tune from one of my musical heroes, Akira Yamaoka. Second only to Yoko Shimomura in my mind for elite Japanese soundtrack composers, Akira is a very special kind of music producer, having quite literally set the bar for sound engineering in modern horror games through his work in the Silent Hill franchise. I’ve played a lot of games through the years including many horror titles, and I have yet to come across another series with such a domineering and immersive soundtrack that places you right into feelings of grief, sadness and the nagging feeling that a violent haunting is afoot. If you care to explore his discography further, you can click here for his website. That said, please do smash play on Null Moon from the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack, and Happy Halloween 23!
Another Halloween, another dark tune from AY. Check out his tunes and play his games every spooky season, and every day for that matter, because as we all recognize his tunes are just as important as a balanced breakfast. Image source: https://www.songkick.com/artists/8526574-akira-yamaoka
Alessa / me / my persona
Finally, a character sheet.
Added both personal information and character story information. Anything unrealistic most likely has to do with Alessa the character.. obviously.
“Hey, God,
I Think You Owe Me A Great, Big Apology.”

THIS WEDNESDAY (4/16), 7PM EDT on twitch.tv/idoherty451: It’s all about Maria this week: the motel, the mansion, the Moongrove, and everything in between. Three pieces of music outline this journey, including a new one written for the remake, and I’ll be taking a deep dive on each one, outlining the subliminal story they tell about who Maria is and what she wants.
If you want to catch up, check out the YouTube playlist for my entire commentary thus far. MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUND!
